About TOEFL 2024

What is TOEFL exam? The TOEFL test is a standardised English language proficiency test that assesses the English language skills of candidates who wish to study abroad. The TOEFL full form is the Test of English as Foreign Language. The TOEFL exam is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is held using the computer-based TOEFL iBT format. The alternative paper-delivered method can only be used in locations lacking an internet connection. TOEFL exam syllabus generally measures the four communication skills - reading, listening, speaking, and writing to enroll international students.

The TOEFL exam is approved for employment and immigration purposes and for entrance to more than 11,000 colleges and institutions in 150 different countries. Top countries like the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English language proficiency of international students. The computer-based ETS TOEFL is administered more than 60 times annually and can be taken at designated testing centres. The TOEFL exam dates are available throughout the year at various test centres across the country. The candidates can check availability of the TOEFL exam dates 2024 before registering for the proficiency test on the official website of ETS.

After the TOEFL test dates, the score achieved is valid for two years. TOEFL 2024 registration is around the clock. Furthermore, bear in mind that there are no prerequisites for taking the TOEFL Essentials Test; rather, candidates must achieve the minimal TOEFL score requirements, both sectional and overall, established by the school to which they are applying. The TOEFL exam fee in India is USD 205 (Rs. 17,140 approx.) for the iBT test and USD 120 (Rs. 10,030 approx.) for the TOEFL Essential. Candidates can register for the TOEFL exam through the ETS official website.

  • ETS discontinued the TOEFL Paper Based Test on January 20, 2024.
  • On May 6, 2024, ETS announced that TOEFL scores for exams taken on or after May 5, 2024, will be considered valid for the Australia visa purpose. Earlier, scores of the TOEFL exam were under review by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in July, and the scores were no longer accepted.
  • The TOEFL exam duration has been reduced to less than two hours from three hours. However, this does not apply to the paper-based test.
  • The TOEFL iBT preparation materials will be updated in tune with these changes.
  • In addition to this, streamlined instructions and navigation will assist the candidates throughout the test.
  • The TOEFL reading section has been cut short for the candidates.
  • All unscored TOEFL questions will be removed.
  • More transparency will be exercised in revealing the TOEFL score available from July 26, onwards.
  • ETS has launched a new app called the TOEFL Go! Candidates can prepare for the latest version of the TOEFL iBT test anytime, anywhere on TOEFL Go! TOEFL application. As part of ETS's commitment to improving the TOEFL iBT test-taking experience, access to the app will be completely free for test takers.
  • With the launch of TOEFL Go!, test takers can expect digital practice and performance feedback in all four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
  • Local payment options will be introduced to facilitate the convenience of the candidates in payment of the TOEFL exam fees.
  • A customer service centre will be made available for the candidates soon, which will be operational for all seven days of the week for 12 hours a day.

                                                  1. Can I give TOEFL Paper Based Test?

ETS has officially discontinued the TOEFL Paper-Based Test from January 20, 2024. Currently, there are 3 types of TOEFL test formats, namely: TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Based Test, and TOEFL Essential.  Apart from TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Based and TOEFL Essential give the applicant the opportunity to give the TOEFL exam from the comfort of their homes. However, the applicants must meet the relevant test room requirements prior to the exam.

                                                  2. What is the TOEFL exam for?

Foreign universities use the TOEFL as a standardized test to assess students who want to study abroad in terms of their English language proficiency. Many study abroad universities like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and others accept TOEFL scores to assess the English language skills of the students for top courses.

                                                  3. How many marks is for the TOEFL exam?

Scores can vary from 0 to 120. The Speaking and Writing section responses are scored using a combination of AI scoring and ETS-certified raters. The time it takes to send findings varies depending on how the test was administered and how recipients are informed of the results.

                                                  4. What is the eligibility criteria for the TOEFL?

The TOEFL exam has no set requirements according to the ETS, who is the official TOEFL conducting body. However, if you are 15 years or younger, you would be required parental consent.

                                                  5. Which countries accept TOEFL?

TOEFL is accepted by over 150 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, and Canada.

                                                  6. Is TOEFL easier than IELTS?

Which exam is easier between IELTS and TOEFL is completely subjective. It is thought that the reading section of IELTS is simpler than the TOEFL reading section. Compared to the IELTS essay's word limit of 250 words, the TOEFL essay is longer at 300 words. As a result, you need to prepare even more for the TOEFL reading section.

                                                  Questions related to TOEFL

Have a question related to TOEFL ?

GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and GMAT are standardized tests often required for admission to universities abroad, but they serve different purposes. The **GRE** (Graduate Record Examination) is used for admission to graduate programs and some business schools, focusing on verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. The **TOEFL** (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and **IELTS** (International English Language Testing System) assess English language proficiency, often required for non-native speakers applying to English-speaking countries; TOEFL is more common in the U.S., while IELTS is popular in the U.K. and other regions. The **GMAT** (Graduate Management Admission Test) is specifically for business school admissions, testing quantitative, verbal, analytical writing, and integrated reasoning skills, and is required for MBA programs. I would advise that you get in touch with a prominent abroad education advisor - a great one will really help you through the entire process, end-to-end.

If you have good English proficiency, both IELTS and TOEFL should be manageable, but each has its unique format. IELTS is considered more straightforward in terms of language and structure, especially its speaking test, which involves a face-to-face conversation with an examiner. TOEFL, on the other hand, is entirely computer-based, including the speaking section. In terms of preparation time, if you're confident in your English skills, around 2 to 4 weeks of focused study, mainly familiarizing yourself with the test format and practicing timed exercises, should be sufficient. Ultimately, the "easier" test depends on your comfort with the test style.

For students aiming to study in public universities, English language proficiency exams like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and TOEIC are often required because they are specifically designed to assess English skills in an academic context, which is crucial for success in such institutions. DELF, which tests French language proficiency, may not be sufficient for English-speaking universities. The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are both standardized tests used to assess English language proficiency, but they have some key differences. IELTS is typically used in the UK, Australia, and Canada, while TOEFL is more commonly accepted by U.S. universities. IELTS includes four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, with the Speaking test conducted face-to-face. In contrast, TOEFL also covers Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, but the Speaking section is recorded and evaluated later. IELTS is paper-based or computer-based, whereas TOEFL is primarily internet-based (iBT). Additionally, IELTS uses a band scoring system ranging from 1 to 9, while TOEFL scores range from 0 to 120. The IELTS is often seen as more suitable for British English and everyday contexts, while TOEFL is more academic and American English-focused.

To be eligible to study an MBA at Seoul National University (SNU), you typically need to submit either IELTS or TOEFL scores to demonstrate English proficiency.
