TOEFL test results are given in three main categories.
The TOEFL exam measures a candidate's proficiency in the English language, focusing on four key language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. TOEFL's highest score is 6. These skills are evaluated through various question types and tasks:
You will receive four scaled section scores and a total score.
Skill | Level | Description |
Reading | Advanced (24–30) | TOEFL Reading assesses a candidate’s ability to understand written materials, such as academic texts or articles. Candidates will encounter multiple-choice questions, summary tasks, and fill-in-the-blank exercises. |
Listening | Advanced (22–30) | TOEFL listening section evaluates comprehension of spoken English, including academic lectures, discussions, and conversations. It comprises MCQs, summary tasks, and dialogue completion items. |
Speaking | Advanced (25–30) | TOEFL speaking requires candidates to express their thoughts on various topics. There will be six tasks, including integrated and independent speaking tasks, recorded and assessed by human raters. |
Writing | Advanced (24–30) | TOEFL writing is designed to evaluate writing skills through two tasks. An integrated writing task assesses the ability to summarize information from a reading passage and a listening clip, and an independent writing task to provide an opinion on a given topic. |
A score ranging between 100 and 110 is generally considered to be a good TOEFL score for international students. However, there is no exact “good TOEFL score” that is applicable in all cases. The best way to approach this question is by checking TOEFL cutoffs for select universities. Many universities provide the previous year's cutoffs and the average TOEFL score of enrolled students for a particular course.
Candidates may use them as a reference to set their target TOEFL score before starting TOEFL preparation. For example, the TOEFL score for top MBA colleges in the USA is above 100. Know the TOEFL score cutoff for desired universities and try to set that target before starting TOEFL preparation.
The average TOEFL 2026 scores depend on the university selected by candidates for admission. Each university releases the TOEFL cutoffs to meet for admission into certain courses of study. So, an average TOEFL result is simply that which is just above the cutoff. This score is neither very high nor very low for students. So, an average TOEFL score is approximately 90. Or, any score between 90 and 95 is considered an average TOEFL result.
Official TOEFL scores are released 3 days after the actual test; however, students can view their unofficial TOEFL scores for the Reading and Listening sections after the completion of their test. The unofficial TOEFL score is 100% accurate when compared to the official scores.
TOEFL MyBest Scores are relevant to candidates who have taken the TOEFL multiple times in 2 consecutive years. In such cases, ETS allows candidates to combine the highest sectional scores obtained in all the attempts to get the best TOEFL score. Also known as TOEFL super scores, this allows candidates to take the TOEFL a lesser number of times to get the desired TOEFL points.
Many top universities across the world accept TOEFL MyBest scores as proof of English language proficiency. Study abroad aspirants can directly enquire about the university they are applying for regarding the TOEFL MyBest score acceptability. However, the TOEFL test dates of the last 2 years are only considered for calculating TOEFL super scores. Not older than that.
