Step 1- Apply for a student visa:

International students who wish to study in Ireland can apply for two types of Ireland student visa.

  1. C study visa: You will have to apply for this visa if you plan to study in Ireland for less than three months. This short-stay visa is for participating in a training program or course of 90 days duration or less.

  2. D study visa: You will have to apply for this visa if you enrol for a course that is longer than three months. This is the visa usually opted for by international students.

In order to get your student visa you must have the required score in an approved English language proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL. This is also mandatory for university admission. Some of the universities even accept scores from the PTE or the Duolingo English test.

You must also get a residence permit to stay in Ireland for more than three months if you are from a non-EU or non-EEA country. This is also applicable to Indians who seek PR in Ireland after their studies. You must apply for a residence permit at the local Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB), which is a unit of Ireland’s national police force. You must pay a fee of 300 Euros for the registration of Ireland permanent residency for Indian. These are the steps to get an Ireland PR visa after study.

Step 2- Do an internship while you study

International students are allowed to work while studying in Ireland for 20 hours per week during their course and 40 hours per week during vacations. You can use this opportunity to get an internship in the company you wish to work in after your studies or in a field of your choice.

Step 3- Get a post-study work permit

Once you have finished your course, you are eligible for a post-study work permit. There are two types of work permits you can apply for:

  1. Irish general work permit: This permit allows non-EU citizens to work in Ireland for two years once the applicants have a valid job offer.

  2. Critical skills employment permit: This permit is given to practicing professionals which is included in the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List which includes jobs in the tech sector as well. This permit makes it easier to get permanent residency Ireland for non-EU citizens.

The fee for acquiring these work permits is 500 Euros for a work permit which is of 6 months or less and 1000 Euros for a work permit of more than 6 months to two years. However, to get a work permit you must have a job in Ireland that pays at least 30,000 Euros per annum.

Step 4 - Extend your work visa

Even though both the general work permit and the critical skills employment permit have a limited period of validity, you can always extend them up to three years. This will make you eligible for Ireland permanent residency for Indian.

Step 5 - Apply for permanent residency

If you have stayed in Ireland for the mandatory five years, then you can fill out the Ireland PR application. For instance, if you are a student doing a two-year masters course in Ireland and after that, you get a general work permit of a two-year duration, you can extend your permit for one more year and then apply for permanent residency Ireland. However, you can apply for a permanent residency after two years if you have a critical skills employment permit. These are the steps in the Ireland PR process.

How to apply for Ireland PR from India?

Candidates can follow the steps mentioned below to apply for Ireland permanent residency for Indian. Once the Ireland PR application is successfully submitted, it will take six to eight months for the Ireland PR process. The Republic of Ireland permanent residency is valid for five years, which can be renewed or you can apply for citizenship in Ireland after five years.

Once the Ireland PR application is accepted, candidates will receive a letter from Immigration Service Delivery. Candidates will be asked to submit their permanent residency Ireland application fee, which is €500. This application fee is to be submitted within 28 days from the letter receiving date. After this, candidates have to make an appointment with their local Ireland immigration office to register their Ireland PR permission. An additional registration fee is also required to be paid by the candidate.
