Duration of the MD degree offered in Italy
The medical course (MD - Doctor in Surgery & Medicine) offered in Italian colleges or universities has a duration of 6 years. This includes 54 months of classes and a 12-month internship programme. The National Medical Commission considers this course equivalent to MBBS in India, as it has an adequate duration of teaching and clinical practice.
In the duration of 54 months, the curriculum incorporates 5 years of classroom learning and 12 months of internship. In the first 3 years, pre-clinical subjects are taught, followed by the clinical practice. The remaining two years include specialisation, in which students are trained in a particular specialisation. So, the medical courses offered by Italian colleges and universities are of longer duration, as they also offer specialisation along with pre-clinical subjects.
Therefore, the course duration meets the requirements set by the National Medical Council and is valid for all Indian medical aspirants.

English As a Medium of Instruction
Although the majority of universities and colleges in Italy offer MD courses in Italian, a few top institutions offer English-taught medical courses. These top universities and colleges do not fall short of the standards of other top universities and colleges that offer Italian MD courses when compared. Moreover, the top university in Italy, the University of Rome 'La Sapienza (72nd place in the QS world ranking), offers an English-taught MD course.
All modules, including both theoretical and practical, in the curricula are taught in English. Students who studied English as their primary medium of instruction until their 12th grade can easily adapt without any inconvenience.
As the National Medical Commission has mandated English-taught medical courses, any medical course that uses a foreign language as the primary medium of instruction will be considered invalid. Hence, students who obtain those degrees will no longer be eligible to practice in India.
