Is an MBBS from Italy valid in India?

In order to be eligible to practice in India, students must select colleges that comply with the National Medical Council guidelines. These guidelines ensure that the medical courses are competent to educate candidates who wish to practice in India. The purpose of these guidelines is to provide students with adequate education and clinical skills so they do not fall short of existing medical standards in India. These are the factors that affirm the validity of Italian colleges and universities to practice in India:

Italy offers the Doctor in Medicine & Surgery (officially called Laurea Magistrale in Medicina e Chirurgia in Latin), abbreviated as MD, as a medical course to candidates who wish to become doctors. While many top universities worldwide offer medical courses, some Italian universities are exceptional in academic & clinical standards, always on par with the latest & advanced clinical practices. These factors not only benefit students but also help them comprehend better.

NMC Rules Explained: Is an Italian university MBBS Degree Valid in India?

    1. Duration of the MD degree offered in Italy

The medical course (MD - Doctor in Surgery & Medicine) offered in Italian colleges or universities has a duration of 6 years. This includes 54 months of classes and a 12-month internship programme. The National Medical Commission considers this course equivalent to MBBS in India, as it has an adequate duration of teaching and clinical practice.

In the duration of 54 months, the curriculum incorporates 5 years of classroom learning and 12 months of internship. In the first 3 years, pre-clinical subjects are taught, followed by the clinical practice. The remaining two years include specialisation, in which students are trained in a particular specialisation. So, the medical courses offered by Italian colleges or universities are of longer duration as they also offer specialisation along with pre-clinical subjects.

Therefore, the duration of the course meets the requirements set by the National Medical Council and is valid for all Indian medical aspirants.

    1. English as a medium of instruction

Although the majority of universities and colleges in Italy offer MD courses in Italian, a few top institutions offer English-taught medical courses. These top universities and colleges do not fall short of the standards of other top universities and colleges that offer Italian MD courses when compared. Moreover, the top university in Italy, the University of Rome 'La Sapienza ( 65th place in the QS world ranking), offers an English-taught MD course.

All modules, including both theoretical and practical, in the curricula are taught in English. Students who studied English as their primary medium of instruction until their 12th grade can easily adapt without any inconveniences.

As the National Medical Commission has mandated English-taught medical courses, any medical course that uses a foreign language as the primary medium of instruction will be considered invalid. Hence, students who obtain those degrees will no longer be eligible to practice in India.

    1. Subjects taught in MD in Italy

The Indian Medical Commission considers a medical course valid if it teaches these subjects:

    • Community Medicine,

    • General Medicine,

    • Psychiatry,

    • Paediatrics,

    • General Surgery,

    • Anaesthesia,

    • Obstetrics and Gynaecology,

    • Orthopaedics,

    • Otorhinolaryngology,

    • Ophthalmology,

    • Dermatology,

    • Emergency or Casualty services,

    • lab services and their sub-specialities.

Italian universities and colleges teach foundational sciences for the first 3 years in the course. In these years, all the fundamental sciences such as biochemistry, pharmacy, and human physiology are taught. The clinical years focus on subjects such as pathology, pharmacology, infectious diseases, neurology, mental health, and surgery, etc. All the medical colleges’ curricula have a comprehensive approach to all medical subjects, as directed by the National Medical Commission. So, the medical courses offered by Italian universities cover all the above-mentioned subjects as directed by the NMC, while incorporating specialisation in the same course.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Why do Italian universities maintain modern standards/practices?
    A:

The quality of education and clinical exposure provided to students should be on par with the ongoing research and clinical developments. Keeping up with all the developments in medicine ensures better clinical practice for medical students.

Q: What are the disadvantages of studying MBBS in Italy without NEET?
    A:

Students who study MBBS in Italy without NEET cannot return to India to practice. Still, they can graduate with a medical degree and practice in their country of study.

Q: Do Italian universities test language proficiency?
    A:

Yes, certain universities may test the language proficiency of applicants and require an exam such as IELTS or TOEFL. Other colleges might exempt students from taking an exam, as they evaluate 12th-grade English marks.

Q: Why do Italian universities have 6 years of duration for their medical courses?
    A:

Even though Italian universities fulfil the 54-month medical education criteria, the additional years are for specialisations that most of the Indian universities do not offer. So it takes an additional year to study specialisation.
