USMLE Registration 2024 - There are three steps in the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The candidate may register for USMLE steps 1 and step 2 CK in any order but only after passing these two tests, they can move to USMLE step 3. The process to register for USMLE 2024 differs for each Step. Each application form of USMLE Steps is unique and needs to be registered at its appropriate entity.

Students who are studying or graduated from medical schools outside of the United States and Canada must do the USMLE registration through ECFMG on the IWA (Interactive Web Applications) for Steps 1 and 2. However, any student can register for the USMLE Step 3 through the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).

USMLE Registration Dates 2024

To register for USMLE, the candidates need to select the eligibility period before booking the exam dates. Once the selected eligibility period is sanctioned, then they are free to select any available USMLE exam dates around the year.

Candidates meeting the eligibility criteria of the USMLE can proceed to register for USMLE online. The registration for the 3 steps has to be done separately and one after the other. All the details to apply for the USMLE three Steps are mentioned below.

Step 1 USMLE Registration Process

Indian medical candidates or any other international candidates outside the USA or Canada need to apply through the ECFMG website for the USMLE 1 registration. Whereas the students from the USA and Canada can do the Step 1 registration through NBME platform. The detailed process to register for USMLE Step 1 is mentioned below.

Stage 1 - Create an ECFMG account

  • Students should do the ECFMG USMLE Step 1 sign-up through ECFMG's Interactive Web Applications (IWA) at secure2.ecfmg.org/usmleidrequest/usmleidrequestnavigator.aspx.

  • Within a few days the ECFMG ID will be generated and sent to the applicant's email.

Stage 2 - Apply for Form-186

  • Candidates can fill the Form-186 at ECFMG’s Web Interaction portal with the ECFMG ID and password.

  • Make the fee payment of $160 and complete it. Once done download Form-186 in PDF format.

  • Notarize the Form-186 by uploading the relevant documents.

Stage 3 - Fill out the USMLE Step 1 application form

  • Once the Form-186 status is confirmed the candidate can proceed with the Step 1 application through the ECFMG account.

  • Fill in the details and choose the 3-month eligibility and test location.

  • Pay the USMLE Step 1 exam fee and submit. Once done an email confirmation will be received for the completion of Step 1 application of USMLE registration.

Stage 4 - Obtaining the schedule permit

  • Candidates need to obtain the schedule permit to book the Step 1 USMLE exam dates and test centre.

  • For this purpose, the candidate's medical school must be registered with the EMSWP. Through EMSWP, the ECFMG will send a request to the candidate’s medical school for status verification.

  • Once confirmed, the scheduling permit will sent to the applicant's email from 6 months before the eligibility period.

Stage 5 - Booking the USMLE test dates.

  • This is the last stage of Step 1 USMLE registration. The candidate can log into the Prometric website by using the scheduling number or ID received in the schedule permit.

  • Book the preferred exam date and test centre and complete the USMLE 1 registration.

Documents required for the USMLE Registration for Step 1

The following documents are to be uploaded while registering for the USMLE Step 1.

  • Passport

  • Passport size photo

  • Form-186 (obtained during the registration process)

  • Medical school degree certificate (for graduates only)

Step 2 CK USMLE Registration

Indian or international medical candidates can register for USMLE step 2 online through the ECFMG. Whereas the candidates from the US or Canada can do the Step 2 USMLE registration through NBME. The process to register for USMLE Step 2 CK is similar to Step 1. Candidates who have already obtained Form-186 need not apply again in Step 2.

The Step 2 USMLE registration is as follows.

  • Login to the ECFMG account and fill out the Step 2 application form.

  • Select the 3-month eligibility period and test location.

  • Pay the Step 2 USMLE registration fee and submit.

  • Once the online med school verification/Status Verification is done the schedule permit issuance will be notified to the applicant's email.

  • Visit the Prometric website and log in using the scheduling number received on the scheduling permit.

  • Now, book the preferred exam date and USMLE test centre and complete the Step 2 USMLE registration.

Documents required to register for USMLE Step 2

Candidates registering for Step 2 before Step 1, can consider the following documents. If the ECFMG certification is already done at Step 1, then there is no need to upload the below documents at this stage.

  • Passport

  • Passport size photo

  • Form-186 (obtained during the registration process)

  • Medical school degree certificate (for graduates only)

Additional Information for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK

  • Test dates can be scheduled up to six months in advance.

  • If one is not able to take the test within the eligibility period, one must contact ECFMG to apply for a one-time eligibility period extension; a fee will be charged for this service.

  • If the applicant doesn’t take the examination within the eligibility period, he/she must re-apply with a new application and fee.

  • The application fee is nonrefundable.

Step 3 USMLE Registration

Any candidate from any location can register for USMLE Step 3 through the FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards). The details for the Step 3 USMLE registration are given below.

Basic requirements for Indian candidates to register for the USMLE Step 3

  • Passed the USMLE Step 1 & Step 2 exams

  • Qualified for the OET Exam (Occupational English Test)

  • ECFMG Certification

  • Completed MD or DO degree from medical schools listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Step 3 USMLE Registration Process

Follow the below process to register for USMLE step 3.

  • Create a new FSMB account.

  • Login to the FSMB account and apply for the Step 3 application.

  • Fill in the form with the required personal and academic information and choose the suitable eligibility period.

  • Upload the necessary documents make the fee payment and submit.

  • The application processing can take around 2 weeks.

  • Check the scheduling permit status. Once confirmed proceed with booking the USMLE Step 3 test date.

  • Visit the Prometric website to schedule the preferred test date and test centre and complete the Step 3 USMLE registration process.

Documents Required - The ECFMG certification is required while registering for Step 3. Candidates who qualified Step1 and Step 2 and OET exam will be eligible for ECFMF Certification.

Additional Information for USMLE Step 3

  • Test dates can be scheduled up to six months in advance.

  • If one is unable to test within one’s eligibility period, contact the FSMB to apply for a one-time eligibility period extension; a fee is charged and restrictions may apply.

  • If the exam is not taken within the eligibility period, the candidate has to re-apply with a new application and fee.

Indian candidates can apply for the USMLE exam through the ECFMG IWA portal for Steps 1 and 2. Whereas for Step 3 the registration should be done through the FSMB website. 4. What is the cost of USMLE Step 1 exam?

The examination fee for the USMLE Step 1 is USD 1000. Additionally, the candidates have to pay an international surcharge of USD 195 if they are attempting the exam outside the states of the USA or Canada.
