The candidates who appear for the GRE exam receive an email when their GRE scorecard with 260 to 340 markscale is available on their ETS account. The sectional GRE scores are provided on a scale of 130 to 170 for verbal and quantitative reasoning each. On the other hand, analytical writing is graded on a scale of 0 to 6. Test takers can access their results of GRE 2025 by logging into their registered ETS account. Achieving a good GRE score helps international students be a part of top universities abroad. Generally, a 160 score of GRE in each section is considered a good score for aspirants. However, every university releasestheir respective GRE cutoffs for students to get admission. Students must register for the exam 2 to 3 months before the exam date to prepare well and ace the GRE test successfully. The GRE score validity is 5 years; students can send their best score within these 5 years to their selected universities. GRE scores have two aspects, which are a scaled score between 130 and 170 and a GRE percentile 2025 rank, which serves as a proven measure to check an applicant's readiness for master-level courses abroad. Anything above the 75th percentile in GRE results is generally good. GRE Subject test results time is notified within 5 weeks. Every GRE subject test is calculated on a score scale of 200 to 990. GRE score is a crucial eligibility for a candidate to get admission in MS or MBA programs abroad. Once you take the GRE general test at the test centre, you will receive an unofficial scorecard instantly. However, this scorecard will only have the GRE test scores of verbal and quantitative reasoning. The scores of the analytical writing section will be covered only in the official scorecard. Your total score ranges from 260 to 340, combining Verbal and Quant. AWA is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 6. Candidates can send the GRE test scores to up to 4 universities for free on the test date. This fee is already included in the GRE registration fee, however, if you want to send the socres to more than 4 universities, or ask for additional scorecards, you will need to pay additional fees. Only Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections contribute to the final GRE score, while AWA does not contribute to this.

A good score in GRE 2025 depends on the university and the course of study. Generally, every university poses its own GRE cutoffs for international students. So, anything way above the minimum GRE requirements of a university is considered good for the applicants.
In general, a score above 160 in quantitative and verbal reasoning is a good GRE score. On the other hand, a good score for the GRE Analytical Writing (AWA) section is 4.0 or higher. The 75th and 90th percentiles in GRE results are also good scores.
After 10 to 15 days of the exam date, students will receive their official GRE results for the general test. At the GRE 2025 test centre, candidates who took the computer-based exam can find out their unofficial verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning results.
The unofficial GRE score for analytical writing will not be made available to candidates after the GRE test because the essay question is not scored in real-time. GRE score 2025 will be evaluated on a scale from 130 to 170. On August 1, 2011, the scoring system was modified, and it has remained that way ever since. The breakdown of the GRE score 2025 report according to the GRE 2025 syllabus is:
GRE Verbal Reasoning Score & GRE Quantitative Reasoning Score tells the total number of the answers that have been attempted correctly by the candidate. This raw score later gets converted to a scaled scoring known as Equating. For the Analytical Writing section, there is a trained rater and e-rater developed by ETS. If both of them give same scores to the essay, the final score would be the average of these two scores. And if teh two scores are different, a third-human-trained rater will enter the scene and the final score will be the avergae of the two scores given by the two human raters.
Measure | GRE Scores |
GRE Verbal Reasoning | 130–170, in 1-point increment |
GRE Quantitative Reasoning | 130–170, in 1-point increment |
GRE Analytical Writing | 0–6, in half-point increment |
When registering for the GRE 2025, test takers have the option of selecting the recipients of their GRE scorecard. The candidates' official Graduate Institution Score Reports are issued immediately by ETS to each applicant's designated GRE score receivers. The best colleges announce their department-specific cut-off for admission after receiving the GRE total score. The GRE verbal and quantitative reasoning cut-off for several universities' programs is also available online.
University | Verbal section | Quantitative section | Analytical writing section |
---|---|---|---|
158 | 159 | 5.3 | |
159 | 158 | 4.8 | |
153 – 156 | 167 | 4.5 | |
155 | 167 | 5.0 | |
163 | 166 | 4.5 |
For each of the six GRE 2025 topic tests, scores are reported on a scale from 200 to 990, in 10-point increments. Sub-scores for the biology and psychology assessments are given on a scale of 20 to 99, with each point worth one. The GRE score validity is up to 5 years. So, aspirants for higher education can provide the universities or institutions with their most current GRE subject scores from 2025 or the results of all exams taken in the previous five years.
Only questions that have been correctly answered are taken into account when grading the GRE 2025 Subject Test. No points are deducted for improperly marked answers. The number of questions that must be successfully answered varies depending on how challenging the test's questions are. As a result, the reported GRE subject score may fluctuate even though the same number of right answers were given on all exams.
After receiving their unofficial GRE results, test participants have the option to accept or reject their scores. After viewing the scores, the GRE General Exam 2025 results cannot be changed. GRE scores for any specific component cannot be cancelled for the exam.
After cancellation, the student's GRE score will not be available for review or transmitted to the colleges and universities they selected while registering for the exam. The GRE results won't appear in the reportable history area of the students' ETS accounts, and they won't be returned if the students decide to cancel their GRE score 2025.
The GRE Score Select helps the candidates in deciding the total GRE scores 2025 that are to be sent to the designated institutions or universities. Candidates can do it by two methods:
1. On test day: Aspirants can opt to send their GRE scores to the institutions of choice on the test day. They can opt to either send the ‘Most Recent’ or ‘All’ for the Four Free Score reports.
Most Recent: Sends the scores from the GRE scorecard 2025.
All: Sends all scores from all the GRE tests taken in the last five years.
Note: For the GRE 2025 Subject Test and GRE General Test paper-based exam, aspirants are required to select the designated institutions that will receive the scores at the time of registration.
2. After test day: An additional cost will be levied on the test takers if they want to send the scores to institutions other than the four that are free.
Most Recent: Sends the scores from the GRE score report 2025.
All: Sends all scores from all the GRE tests taken in the last five years.
Any: Sends scores from one or as many tests were taken in the last five years.
So, students think about what is the lowest GRE score accepted. They also must be aware of the maximum total score one can get on the GRE. The total GRE score for min and max is given in the table below:
GRE test sections | GRE min score | GRE max score |
Verbal Section | 130 | 170 |
Quantitative Section | 130 | 170 |
Analytical writing | 0 | 5.0 |
Most of the students appearing for the exam have the question, "GRE scores are valid for how many years?" To this answer is: the GRE score validity is for 5 years. Students can use their best GRE score for their admission application for a period of five years. Till the GRE score validity, the candidate can apply for admission to various colleges.
GRE Graduate Institution Score Report: The institution score report is sent to the institutions at the time of GRE registration. Candidates can select the recipient of the GRE score report as per their choice. ETS is responsible for sending the GRE scores 2025 directly to the designated institutes.
The GRE Scores 2025 that the institutes will receive will contain the following details:
Whether a candidate is preparing for a business school or seeking admission to a graduate school, the GRE serves as a comprehensive solution. The GRE is the only exam that is recognised by the vast majority of universities worldwide.
A GRE score total is 340, the minimum score is 260, and the analytical writing is 0 to 6. The GRE score range for the subject test varies from 200 to 990 for each GRE subject test in 10-point increments. 20-99 is the possible range of subscores, in one-point increments.
Section | Minimum score | Maximum GRE score |
Quantitative Section | 130 | 170 |
Verbal Section | 130 | 170 |
Essay | 0 | 6 |
The GRE total marks and the highest mark is 340 and the minimum is 260 where the the minimum best GRE score. For quantitative and verbal is 130 and the analytical writing is 0 to 6. The lowest score on the GRE is not zero. The lowest possible score in the GRE of the sections is 130 only.
The average GRE scores achieved by students in different disciplines are mentioned below for references. The requirement may vary depending upon the preferred course of study. For example, students seeking engineering courses may require a good GRE score in quantitative reasoning, whereas students seeking fine arts courses may require a good GRE exam score in humanities and arts.
Major | Verbal Reasoning | Quantitative Reasoning | Analytical Writing |
Business | 153 | 159 | 3.7 |
Education | 151 | 148 | 3.8 |
Engineering | 151 | 161 | 3.4 |
Humanities and Arts | 156 | 152 | 4.1 |
Law | 155 | 152 | 4.1 |
Life Sciences | 150 | 150 | 3.8 |
Physical Sciences | 152 | 162 | 3.4 |
Social Behavioural Sciences | 154 | 154 | 3.9 |
The verbal and quantitative measures of the GRE test are scored based on correct responses in the operational sections. A raw score for every correct answer in the GRE test is computed, and later these raw scores are converted to scale scores through equating. These raw scores can be converted by the candidate using the GRE score calculator tool available online.
The analytical section receives the score from a trained rater on a 6-point scale. Later, the e-rater, i.e., the computer program, gives the score for the essays. The final score of the essays is the average of both human and computer scores on a scale of 0 to 6.
For calculating the GRE scores, the ETS considers the GRE score from the last 3 years of the GRE scorecard of all GRE test takers. Here the percentile indicates the percentage of receiving a GRE score less than the candidate. For instance, if the GRE score of a section is 156, which is 70 percent, then it indicates that 156 is the highest GRE score among 70 percent of GRE test takers in that particular section.
Since the candidates know about their GRE score and percentiles of which they have scored, among others, this gives an insight into their performance in the GRE exam.
GRE unofficial scores are received at the end of the exam. The GRE unofficial scores comprise scores of only the verbal and quantitative sections. The analytical writing scores will be available only with the official score report.
GRE exam pattern is the overview of a number of GRE questions, scores, and timing for each section, which are mentioned below.
Measure | Number of questions | Allotted time |
Analytical Writing | 2 tasks | 30 minutes per task |
Verbal Reasoning | 20 questions per section | 30 minutes per section |
Quantitative Reasoning | 20 questions per section | 35 minutes per section |
Unscored | Varies | Varies |
Research | Varies | Varies |

Hello,
It depends on the university you are applying to. Most German universities do not require GATE for admission to a Master's in Biotechnology. However, some universities may ask for the GRE , especially if you are applying to a highly competitive program.
You should check the specific admission requirements of the universities you are interested in. Generally, having IELTS (or TOEFL) and a German language proficiency certificate (if the course is in German) is enough.
Hope it helps !
GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and GMAT are standardized tests often required for admission to universities abroad, but they serve different purposes. The **GRE** (Graduate Record Examination) is used for admission to graduate programs and some business schools, focusing on verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. The **TOEFL** (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and **IELTS** (International English Language Testing System) assess English language proficiency, often required for non-native speakers applying to English-speaking countries; TOEFL is more common in the U.S., while IELTS is popular in the U.K. and other regions. The **GMAT** (Graduate Management Admission Test) is specifically for business school admissions, testing quantitative, verbal, analytical writing, and integrated reasoning skills, and is required for MBA programs. I would advise that you get in touch with a prominent abroad education advisor - a great one will really help you through the entire process, end-to-end.
