Types of Scholarships in France

There are primarily 3 different categories of scholarships in France available for both international students and Indian students in France. These scholarships vary in eligibility, scholarship benefits, duration as well as selection procedure and are available for an assortment of different educational programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels for Indian students seeking to study in France.

French Government Scholarships

The French Government offers three different scholarships in France through the Embassy of France in India for students who want to study in France. These scholarships are

  1. Charpak Scholarship Program

  2. Raman Charpak Fellowship

  3. Eiffel Scholarship

Of these scholarship programs, the Charpak and the Raman-Charpak programs are open to direct applications. The Eiffel Scholarship must be applied for by the French university or institution of higher education.

 

1. Charpak Scholarship Program

The Charpak scholarship program is offered by the Embassy of France in India. This French scholarship program offers three different types of funding for Indian students who want to study in France at both the Bachelor’s and the Master’s level.

Research Internship Program

  • Candidate must be an Indian national residing in India.

  • Candidate must be a student at an Indian institution for higher education currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program.

  • The duration of the internship must be 2–3 months in total.

  • Candidate must possess an acceptance letter from the prospective French laboratory for research.

  • Candidate must be less than 30 years old at the time of application.

Exchange Program

  • Candidate must be an Indian national and reside in India.

  • Candidate must be less than 30 years old at the time of application.

  • Candidate must be enrolled in an Indian institution with a tie up with the French institution where the candidate will pursue the exchange semester.

  • Final semester project/lab research in France is not permissible.

Master’s program

  • Candidate must be an Indian national residing in India.

  • Candidate must be a student at an Indian institution for higher education or a professional graduate from an Indian institution with less than three years of work experience at the time of the application.

  • Candidate must be under 30 years of age at the time of the application.

  • Scholarship will only be provided for the duration of the course which takes place in France.

Research Internship Program

The Research Internship Program is a scholarship in France for Indian students from a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in engineering, economics and science who plan to pursue an internship in a French laboratory during the academic break of their education.

 

Scholarship benefits:

  • Student visa fee waiver

  • Monthly stipend of €310 for 3 months.

  • Medical insurance coverage (€300 approx)

  • Guaranteed affordable student housing

Exchange Program Spring/Autumn

The Charpak Exchange Program offers a scholarship in France for Indian exchange students at the Master’s or Bachelor’s level for a duration in the range of 1 – 4 months. The scholarship which falls under the Charpak Exchange Program is the Charpak AME Scholarship.

 

Master’s Program

The Master’s program has two options for a scholarship in France for Indian students at the Master’s level in all fields and has a duration of 1 – 2 years. These French scholarships are the Charpak AME Scholarship and the Charpak BCS Scholarship.

 

Scholarship benefits: Both the Charpak AME and Charpak BCS scholarships have similar benefits for Indian students who are planning to study in France.

These include:

  • Medical insurance coverage (€ 300 /year).

  • Student fee waiver (approximately INR 16,500).

  • Guaranteed affordable student housing.

  • A living allowance of €615. (only for Charpak AME scholarship).

Selection Criteria: Application is selected based on academic proficiency and the quality of the statement of purpose. Candidates with French language knowledge have higher chances but French is not mandatory for application to the French scholarships. For a Master’s scholarship, institutional tie-ups between the prospective French institution and the current Indian institution of the candidates is an asset.

 

2. Raman-Charpak Fellowship

The Raman-Charpak Fellowship is a scholarship in France for Indian students and intended for PhD research students to pursue part of their research at a French institution for 2–6 months. Candidates with permanent positions in institutions or universities and students supported by or in the framework of CEFIPRA are not eligible for this French scholarship.

  • Candidate must be an Indian citizen residing in India and must have registered for a PhD program in a recognized Indian institution.

  • Candidate must be under 30 years of age at the time of the application.

Raman-Charpak Scholarship Benefits

  • Fellowship support of €1500 per month.

  • One return airway ticket between France and India.

  • Insurance coverage in health and travel.

  • Expenses for a residency card, if applicable.

  • Administrative cost waiver for visa, registration etc.

  • Additional support for participation in workshops/seminars during the duration of the fellowship with a maximum limit of €500.

Raman-Charpak Scholarship Selection Criteria

Applicants to the Raman Charpak Fellowship who want to study in France are required to submit a research proposal and a portfolio which is the main determination criteria for awarding the French scholarship.

3. Eiffel Scholarship

The Eiffel Scholarship is an initiative of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and is a scholarship in France for international students for prospective Masters and PhD candidates.

Applications for the Eiffel scholarship in France for international students can only be submitted by French higher education institutions. 

 

Institutional Scholarships

The Institutional scholarships in France are provided directly by certain French universities for prospective students to various programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Some of the specific institutional scholarships in France for Indian students are given below.

 

1. Emile-Boutmy Scholarship

The Emile-Boutmy scholarship in France for international students is an institutional French scholarship for education at Sciences Po Paris which is a leading research and teaching French university. This scholarship cannot be supplemented with any other scholarship.

Emile-Boutmy Scholarship Eligibility

First time applicants from a non-European nation and whose household does not file taxes within the European Union and have been admitted to a UG or PG program.

For Undergraduate scholarships, either of the following will be awarded:

  • Tuition grant of €7,300 per year for the 3 years of the UG program + grant to cover part of cost of living of 5,000 per year.

  • Tuition grant of €7,300, €5,000, or €3,000 per year for the 3 years of the UG program depending on the specific course.

  • A single grant of €19,000 for 3 years of college (awarded on exception)

For Postgraduate scholarships tuition grants of either €10,000 per year or €5,000 per year for 2 years of Masters education are granted.

Emile-Boutmy Scholarship Selection Criteria

Candidates are selected on the basis of the type of profile sought for the program and social criteria.

2.   EDHEC Business School

EDHEC Business School offers a scholarship in France for Indian students who have been admitted to the Masters in Management (MIM) program at EDHEC. This French scholarship is a joint venture of EDHEC and the French Embassy and provides a 50% tuition fee waiver for 2 applicants selected for the MIM program.

 

3.  L’oreal Scholarship

The L’oreal scholarship in France for international students is an institutional French scholarship for education at HEC Paris. This is a French scholarship for students who have been admitted to the MBA program at HEC Paris.

Students admitted to MBA at HEC Paris with significant professional accomplishments, leadership potential, creativity and innovative thinking are eligible for this scholarship.

A grant of €10,000 is awarded to the scholarship recipient.

HEC Paris Scholarship Selection Criteria

Candidates are required to submit a 1,500 word essay on their opinion regarding the style of leading which promotes creativity and innovation which is used for evaluation.

4.  ISAE – MBDA Scholarship

The ISAE – MBDA scholarship program is a joint venture of ISAE SUPAERO institute and the European defense company MBDA. This scholarship in France for Indian students is available for 8 students for 2 different ISAE programs:

MSc AMA (Aerospace Mechanics and Avionics)

MSc AESS (Aeronautical and Space Systems)

For the AMA program: last year Bachelor’s students of Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering may apply.

For the AESS program: last year Bachelor’s students of Electrical or Electronics and Communication Engineering may apply.

ISAE – MBDA Scholarship Benefits

  • Full tuition waiver (€7000 per year) for 2 years.

  • Stipend for living expenses (€5000 per year) for 2 years.

Simultaneously, students who receive this scholarship are awarded a scholarship from the French government which has the following benefits:

  • Student visa fee waived.

  • Medical insurance coverage.

  • Assistance in acquiring affordable accommodation in France.

ISAE – MBDA Scholarship Selection Criteria

Candidates are considered for the scholarship on the basis of the strength of their application materials for the AMA and AESS programs.

5.  Rennes School of Business

There are a number of different scholarships in France for Indian students available at the Rennes School of Business. The three types of French scholarships offered by the Rennes School of Business are:

Rennes School of Business Scholarship Eligibility

Rennes School of Business students who are in the final year of their Bachelor’s program (IBPM) and have been admitted to a Master’s program (MSc or MA) are eligible for this French scholarship.

International students who are enrolled for the Rennes School of Business MSc program are eligible for this French scholarship.

International students who have been admitted to any of the Rennes School of Business Master’s programs (MSc, MA or Master in Management) or are in the first year of the IBPM Bachelor’s program are eligible for this program.

€1,300 per scholarship.

€2,000 per scholarship.

4 categories of scholarship grants are awarded:

  • €6,000 for the Excellent class.

  • €3,000 for the 1st class.

  • €2,000 for the 2nd class.

  • €1,000 for the 3rd class.

Rennes School of Business Scholarship Selection Criteria

Selection is done on the basis of a Personal Statement which is submitted by the candidate.

Co-Finanaced/Joint Scholarships

The Co-Financed or Joint scholarships in France for Indian students are joint ventures between the French Embassy in India and various Indian societies or organizations. There are three French scholarships which fall under this category.

 

1. French Embassy – Krishna Kriti Foundation Co-finanaced Scholarships for Fine Arts

The French Embassy – Krishna Kriti Foundation co-financed scholarship is a French scholarship for Indian students in the domain of visual and fine arts primarily sculpture and painting. The duration of this scholarship in France for Indian students is approximately 6 to 9 months in length.

  • Candidate must be an Indian citizen residing in India.

  • Candidate must be above 18 and below 28 years of age.

  • Candidate must have pursued undergraduate and postgraduate (if applicable) education in the fine arts domain.

  • Candidate must not be a past winner of the fellowship.

French Embassy – Krishna Kriti Foundation Scholarship Benefits

  • Stipend of €615 per month.

  • Medical insurance coverage.

  • Student visa fee waiver.

  • Air tickets from India to France and back.

  • Assistance for acquiring affordable housing.

Scholarship Selection Criteria

Candidates must submit a portfolio of their past artwork. Two candidates are selected from the pool of applicants for this scholarship.

2. French Embassy – Neemrana Music Foundation  Co-finanaced Scholarships for Music

The French Embassy – Neemrana Music Foundation co-financed scholarship is a French scholarship for Indian students in the domain of Western classical music for both singers and musicians. This scholarship in France for Indian students is awarded to two students from a pool of applicants for a duration of 11 months.

  • Candidate must be an Indian citizen residing in India.

  • Candidate must have a high level of proficiency in Western classical music.

  • Candidate must be less than 30 years of age.

  • Monthly stipend of €615.

  • Medical insurance coverage.

  • Assistance for acquiring affordable housing.

  • Return ticket to France.

  • Full tuition waiver at public universities in France or partial waiver at private universities France as per their respective policies.

  • Free pre-departure French language course at Alliance Franciase.

French Embassy – Neemrana  Scholarship Selection Criteria

Once an application is selected, a personal interview is conducted with the candidate before the scholarship is awarded.

3. Institut Mines-Telecom – French Embassy in India Scholarship

The Institut Mines-Telecom is an association of the top 12 engineering and 1 top management school in France and falls under the Ministry of Industry. This scholarship in France for Indian students is available for prospective Masters in Engineering applicants. This program involves 2 years of postgraduate study and a paid internship in the final semester of study and is taught in French at any of the Institut Mines-Telecom institutions.

  • Candidate must be an Indian national.

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor’s in engineering (BE or BTech). Science candidates (BSc) are considered if they have an extraordinary profile.

  • Candidate must have a desire to pursue a Master’s in engineering (ME or MS) and must have been admitted to a program at any of the Institut Mines-Telecom institutions in France.

Institut Mines-Telecom – French Embassy in India Scholarship Benefits

  • Yearly stipend of €5500 for 2 years of education.

  • A simultaneous scholarship from the French government for the duration of the program is also awarded to students with the Institut Mines-Telecom scholarship. This provides a student visa fee waiver, medical insurance coverage and assistance to find affordable housing.

Scholarship Selection Criteria

Candidates for the Institut Mines-Telecom – French Embassy in India scholarship are required to sit for a written exam and give an oral interview. Academic records, written exam results and professional projects are evaluated before the oral interview.

Other Scholarship Programs

Some scholarships in France for Indian students and international students do not fall into any of the three categories for types of scholarships in France. This includes scholarships under other authorities such as the European government or the French Ministry of National Education. Two such French scholarships are:

1. Erasmus+ Scholarships

The Erasmus+ scholarship in France for international students are offered by the European Union. This scholarship is available for Indian students who want to study in France and is applicable for French programs at the Masters and the Doctorate level. The Erasmus+ scholarship in France for Indian students is available for 138 different Masters courses and 42 Doctorates.

The application procedure is dependent of the specific Erasmus+ course chosen by the student. Application deadlines vary with the course of study.

 

2. Assistant d’anglais

The Assistant d’anglais program is a joint venture of the Embassy of France and the French Ministry of National Education. It is a scholarship in France for Indian students which enables students to learn French and at the same time, assimilate themselves into French culture while teaching English.

 

Program eligibility requirements:

  • Candidate must be an Indian national.

  • Candidate must not have taken part in the program in the past.

  • Candidate must be under 35 years of age.

  • Candidate must have a valid IELTS Academic score of at least 7.5.

  • Candidate must have obtained B1 level in Alliance Franciase or have a BA in French from an Indian University.
