The Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a lengthy written document that international universities demand (and now some Indian universities as well) during the application procedure. It is a tool that students utilize to showcase their motivations for applying to a particular program at a specific institution. The primary goal of the SOP is to gain insight into a candidate's background, motivations for selecting a specific career path, and aspirations. This essay provides a comprehensive summary of your past experiences, current engagements, and future plans.
Different universities across the globe usually adhere to a standardized format or template for the Statement of Purpose. Each SOP is written uniquely depending on the specific course or program. The SOP format resembles an essay written in paragraphs. Generally, the SOP is two pages and is divided into five to eight paragraphs. It is crucial to ensure that the overall SOP is logically and coherently organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific topic related to your academic and professional aspirations.
The personal background, reasons for pursuing the course, and immediate career objectives of a candidate must be mentioned in the opening paragraph of the Statement of Purpose. Subsequent paragraphs should delve deeper into the academic and research background, involvement in extracurricular activities, and remarkable achievements (if any). Candidates should emphasize their qualifications for the specific program that they are seeking admission to and summarize the key points in the conclusion. Furthermore, candidates should highlight their enthusiasm for the program and commitment to contributing to its success.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
In high school, my journey with HTML and C Language began, along with practical exposure to Linux Operating System commands. This exposure sparked my interest in computers and their capabilities. I vividly recall my first assignment problem, 'Swapping Values of Two Variables using the Third One', which I solved effortlessly. Witnessing the output on the terminal was truly exhilarating. Additionally, reading an article on 'A Survey on Big Data Analytics: Challenges, Open Research Issues and Tools' further fuelled my passion for computer science, leading me to choose to pursue advanced studies in this domain.
As a result of my exceptional academic performance in high school, I gained admission to XYZ Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Mumbai for my undergraduate studies in Information and Communication Technology. Throughout my time there, I was exposed to a diverse range of subjects including Software Engineering, Computer Networks, and Data Management. Additionally, I studied subjects such as Software Project Management, Software Testing, and Quality Analysis. However, my true passion and expertise lie in the fields of Computer Networking, Cloud Computing, and Database Management.
I did many projects and a few internships, which helped me understand the theoretical concepts and eventually, it evolved my interest in the field of Computer Science Engineering. One of the major projects was PayQR, a web application that we as a five-member team developed to solve the issue occurring during the payment in the cafeteria of our college. My task was requirement gathering, effort estimation, and the design and development of the Database System. I was also responsible for hosting the application on the server. One major issue I faced was handling heavy traffic on the site. During the estimation phase, the estimation of efforts was also another big challenge for me. For this, I did a research internship at my college as a part of the summer internship program and worked with Professor Dr. ABC in the field of Software Engineering where I learned different cost estimation techniques. I also got to know the importance of documentation in the Life Cycle of Software Development parallelly. Besides, I did a Summer Industrial Internship with WXY, Mumbai. While working in a team of seven members that developed a Material Management System using Java Technology stack (JSP, JDBC, & MySQL). I developed the backend functionality following the MVC pattern. This volunteer internship helped me get an insight into Enterprise Application Development.
During my time as an undergraduate student, I created a relational database for a 'Telecom Service Provider'. This project allowed me to grasp fundamental concepts such as entity relationships, keys, joins, and most importantly, writing SQL queries for relational databases. Additionally, I developed a terminal in C language utilizing pointers and signal handlers, as well as simulated a smart home using microcontrollers such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Focusing on core Computer Science courses during my undergraduate studies, I successfully secured a Winter Internship at DEF Private Limited, a multinational corporation, which later led to a job offer.
Apart from academic pursuits, I volunteered for an NGO - LMN, located in New Delhi. Here, I took on the responsibility of educating government school students about computers and their applications. Concurrently, I spearheaded various events focused on Disaster Management in New Delhi, aiming to raise awareness among the residents due to the area's susceptibility to earthquakes. These experiences significantly enhanced my leadership abilities. Furthermore, I have excelled as a state-level basketball and cricket athlete. I have also actively participated in numerous District Level Badminton and Volleyball competitions during my time in school and college, which have contributed to my development as a strong team player.
As mentioned earlier, I have been working as a Software Engineer with PQR Corporate Communication Private Limited, Chennai, since June 2017. Working at PQR helped me understand the basic concepts of cloud and virtualization. I also managed huge databases hosted on MS SQL Database Servers. I learned the Architecture of a Database Server and how the query is processed and stored in the database. For my performance, I was awarded as the ‘Rising Star’ in the first year. I worked on Windows administration, hosting sites, routing web requests, web application firewall, etc. My dedication and ambition towards my work helped me win another award for ‘Best Contribution to Ambition and Competitiveness’ during my second year with PQR.
Since I am a Database Administrator, I know how difficult it is to handle and manage huge data. In the next few years, managing and processing data will be massively required in companies. Hence, Big data processing and analysis is the next big thing and I want to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the same through this course. Moreover, the whole IT infrastructure is moving to cloud rather than self-hosted databases. Therefore, I want to learn the cloud concept in detail and enhance my networking knowledge too. I was exposed to various concepts and technologies during my undergraduate studies as well as in the industry. However, some topics like Big data and Cloud Technology require in-depth knowledge with an extensive amount of research as well as hands-on experience. Whatever knowledge I have gained so far is very fundamental. Therefore, I have decided to pursue the MS program.
After studying subjects like Big Data, Data Mining Algorithms, Cloud Data, and Networking in the master’s program, my immediate goal after the completion of the course is to secure a job opportunity in Tech giants like Google or Microsoft as a Data Engineer or Cloud Support Engineer. In the long run, I would like to reach the upper position in a company as a Technical Architect.
EFG University, one of the renowned private universities, offers a diverse course structure for the MS Information Technology program, which is very impressive. The research work of ABC, Assistant Professor at EFG, in the field of Data Mining attracted me the most. Moreover, the professors have immense knowledge of recent cutting-edge technologies as they also have great experience in the IT industry. This is quite helpful to the students as it adds industry practices to theory.
Capitalizing on my interest in computer science and thorough study of the same during my undergraduate program, I am fully equipped for the MS program. Besides, I am confident that my professional experience combined with internship exposure will facilitate my understanding of the curriculum and enable me to achieve my objectives effectively.
