This step mainly focuses on assessing if the candidate can apply his medical knowledge to the unsupervised practice of medicine. Also, checks if the candidate can manage patient care, and patient management in ambulatory settings, and also make accurate and accepted decisions.
Each step's role in the USMLE is to assess and build up previous knowledge and ensure the physician's capabilities, from basic concepts to independent clinical practice. From ensuring a solid foundation in the USMLE step 1 preparation to applying medical knowledge in a clinical setting, ensuring readiness for supervised patient care in the USMLE step 2 preparation and finally becoming an independent physician making decisions to manage patients and the clinic as a whole in the USMLE step 3 preparation.
The main difference between each step of the USMLE is that at the initial stage of USMLE STEP 1, a candidate's foundational knowledge is assessed whereas in the USMLE step 2, a candidate's clinical knowledge and practical skills are checked for supervised practice, however in the USMLE step 3, a candidates detail knowledge on application of all concepts without any supervision are assessed.
