About The University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is a publicly owned institution that was established on 10 December 1909 by the signing of the University Act. The university has more than 200 clubs and societies.

The University of Queensland is also impressively at the 3rd position when compared in the “Best Global Universities in Australia/New Zealand” categories and “Best Global Universities in Australia”. It secured the position of 36th in “Best Global Universities”. These rankings were conducted by US News in 2024.

The University of Queensland's acceptance rate is very low at 35% to 40%. Only a few of all the applications are granted admission by the university. To be eligible for admissions, all applicants must comply with the educational and entry prerequisites stated by the university based on the programme they have decided to pursue.   • With a very low acceptance rate of nearly 35% to 40%, the University of Queensland is very particular when selecting candidates. The competition is hereby fierce for international students. The University of Queensland gives opportunities to all the students who aspire to and are a part of the university with a variety of scholarships and grants for national and international students. There are numerous international-based scholarships. Some of the scholarships which are available for international students are as follows:

  • Graduate School Scholarships (UQGSS) – includes Research Training Program (RTP): This grant is available for future UQ students and current UQ students and covers living stipend and Tuition fees. This scholarship is based on academic excellence and is limited to courses like Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy or a research-focused professional doctorate at UQ.

  • International Onshore Merit Scholarship: The scholarship is available for future UQ students and is valued at AUD 5000 to AUD 10,000 tuition fee reduction from total tuition. Scholarship reduction is applied to the first 2 semesters (1 semester for Foundation students) and the candidates are automatically considered for this scholarship if they meet the eligibility criteria. 

  • UQ International Excellence Scholarship: It applies to future UQ students and is based on academic excellence. This grant allows a 25% reduction in tuition fees per semester. The grant is renewable and is applicable for the duration of the program (up to 4 years).

  • MBA Student Scholarship – International: This grant is applicable for 12 months and is based on academic excellence. The scholarship is limited to Postgraduate coursework and the applicant must be an international student.

The University of Queensland Eligibility

Candidates must confirm their eligibility to get admitted to the University of Queensland. The eligibility criteria for international students are as follows:

For undergraduate students,

  • One needs to have completed Queensland Year 12, or a qualification equivalent to Queensland Year 12, with the required minimum entry score for the program they are interested in studying.

  • Some undergraduate courses have subject prerequisites – specific subjects must be studied to gain admission

  • Candidates are also required to meet the English language requirement.

For graduate students,

  • For most programmes, candidates need to have completed an approved degree equivalent to an Australian bachelor's degree. However, for some programmes, the university considers other relevant experience, such as work experience.

  • One needs to have achieved a minimum grade point average (GPA) in their previous studies. The GPA is calculated out of 7.0 grade system (Australian GPA) 

  • All applicants meet the English language requirements.

  • GRE or GMAT if required
