Oxford University admission requirements for international students vary with the courses, and applicants can check their eligibility under their selected degree course. However, the common eligibility criteria of Oxford University for Indian applicants across various degree programmes are listed here.

For Undergraduate admission     

Candidates must have a Year XII qualification, studied with either the CBSE (All-India SSC) or CISCE (ISC) boards, with the following grades:

  • For courses requiring A*A*A: Grades A1 A1 A1 A1 A2, with grade A1 in any subjects relevant to the course applied for the CBSE board

  • For CISCE board: Overall grade of at least 90%, with 95% or above in four subjects (including any relevant to the course applied for) and 85% or above in the fifth subject. 

  • For courses requiring A*AA: Grades A1 A1 A1 A2 A2, with grade A1 in any subjects relevant to the course applied for the CBSE board.  

  • For CISCE board: Overall grade of 90% or more, with grades of at least 95% or above in three subjects (including any relevant to the course applied for) and 85% or above in the other two subjects.

  • For courses requiring AAA: Grades A1 A1 A2 A2 A2, with grade A1 in any subjects relevant to the course applied for CBSE board:

  • For CISCE board: Overall grade of 90% or more, with grades of at least 95% or above in two subjects (including any relevant to the course applied for) and 85% or above in the other three subjects. 

Note: State board examinations for NIOS Year XII qualification are not accepted    

Undergraduate qualifications

If the graduate course at Oxford requires ‘strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours' in the UK system, applicants will usually need one of the following qualifications:

  • a professional bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a recognised institution with an overall grade of 60% for degrees awarded by prestigious institutions (e.g. Institutions of National Importance), or 70% for degrees awarded by other institutions; or a cumulative GPA of 3.3 out of 4.0, 5.0 out of 7.0, 6.0 out of 8.0 or 8.0 out of 10.0; or

  • a standard bachelor’s degree (3 years) from a recognised institution with an overall grade of 65% for degrees awarded by prestigious institutions (e.g. Institutions of National Importance), or 70% for degrees awarded by other institutions.

Master’s degree holders from non-recognised institutions

If the graduate course at Oxford requires a ‘first class undergraduate degree with honours' in the UK system, will usually need either:

  • a professional bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a recognised institution with an overall grade of 65% for degrees awarded by prestigious institutions (eg Institutions of National Importance), or 75% for degrees awarded by other institutions; or 3.5 out of 4.0, 5.5 out of 7.0, 6.5 out of 8.0 or 8.5 out of 10.0. 

  • a standard bachelor’s degree (3 years) from a recognised institution with an overall grade of 70% for degrees awarded by prestigious institutions (eg Institutions of National Importance), or 75% for degrees awarded by other institutions.

Masters' qualifications

If the graduate course at Oxford requires a master's degree in the UK system, candidates will need a master’s degree awarded by a recognised institution with an overall grade corresponding to the following:

  • 55% for a pass grade in the UK system

  • 60% for a merit grade in the UK system

  • 70% for a distinction grade in the UK system.
