• Adaptive Testing and Modern Content: The Reading and Listening sections of TOEFL exam are expected to become adaptive, where sectional questions will adjust based on the candidate's answers for a more tailored experience from January 2026. Test topics will focus on current academic settings, like AI research, not focusing on outdated subjects.
• Quicker Results: ETS is set to fast-track the scoring availability in 2026. Candidates can expect their TOEFL results within 72 hours instead of waiting two weeks.
• New TOEFL Scoring Scale: Candidates can expect a new scoring scale in addition to the current one in 2026. A 1–6 band scale will be displayed in addition to the familiar 0–120 score, bringing TOEFL in line with CEFR levels. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a widely accepted international language standard.
• Better Audio: TOEFL test centres will use Koss headphones for the listening section of the test, enhancing clarity of accents, tones, and more. The ETS upgraded audio equipment for listening sections will be available at all TOEFL test centres in the world from January 2026.
• Additional Free Prep: ETS tends to provide a larger number of new TOEFL practice tests and tutorial videos to help candidates with their preparations.
