The International English Language Testing System or the IELTS is meant for applicants who wish to study or work abroad but whose native tongue is not English. The IELTS result will be utilized to fulfil the English language competency requirements for a number of undergraduate and graduate programmes as well as the requirements for visa applications. Among the two formats of the IELTS test, the Academic test is more suitable for students intending to enrol in a foreign college or university, and the General test is better suited for candidates looking to work abroad. The IELTS exam result is widely accepted internationally and is valid for up to two years following the exam date. The IELTS test is used to evaluate student ability in speaking, reading, and writing English. Admissions are based on the scores of the IELTS exam, which is evaluated on a scale of 1 to 9.
Purpose | IELTS Test version |
Study at university at undergraduate or postgraduate level, join a professional organisation in an English-speaking country | IELTS Academic |
Study at below degree level, work or undertake work-related training in an English-speaking country, emigrate to an English-speaking country For resident visa/work permit | IELTS General Training |
Candidates may choose the IELTS version based on the institution or organization they desire to enroll in. There is no specific IELTS selection process for any college or university because the IELTS administering agencies have not established any official IELTS eligibility criteria. However, because the IELTS 2025 selection process differs between organizations, applicants must thoroughly understand the admission standards of the relevant institute when completing the IELTS application form. While each organization establishes its own standards that determine which IELTS score it recognizes, and in some cases both IELTS tests may be recognized. Prospects are advised to check IELTS exam procedures of respective universities on the official websites of them.
Additionally, the IELTS score varies according to the nation, university, and programme the applicant is applying to. For instance, in the IELTS selection process, the majority of business schools in the USA accept an IELTS score band of above 7, whereas those in Oceania or Asia accept an IELTS score above 5.5.

Hello,
It depends on the university you are applying to. Most German universities do not require GATE for admission to a Master's in Biotechnology. However, some universities may ask for the GRE , especially if you are applying to a highly competitive program.
You should check the specific admission requirements of the universities you are interested in. Generally, having IELTS (or TOEFL) and a German language proficiency certificate (if the course is in German) is enough.
Hope it helps !
