International Medical Admissions Test, abbreviated as IMAT, is an entrance exam conducted by the Italian Ministry of University and Research to assess students' theoretical and practical knowledge in biology, physics, and chemistry. This IMAT exam is conducted for both EU and non-EU students to offer admission to medical colleges and universities in Italy. All the public institutions in Italy require an IMAT score for both EU and non-EU students to be admitted to medical courses, as these institutions admit students based on merit.
The IMAT is significant for admission to medical courses such as surgery, veterinary, and dentistry in Italian colleges and universities. This is primarily due to the eligibility criteria set by the Italian educational system. They ensure that every student who comes to study MBBS (MD) in Italy has basic knowledge of fundamental sciences, so they can adapt to the clinical environment. Moreover, the academic rigour of medical colleges in Italy demands higher knowledge of biology, physics and chemistry to adapt to clinical settings.
Students choosing medical colleges and universities in Italy must know how to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge they acquired during their high school years. All the teaching modules and clinical tasks require this knowledge, as each year of the curriculum implements practice alongside learning.
For this purpose, the exam prioritises logic and analytical application over memorising subjects, so students need to understand the concepts and their application, rather than just cramming the subject matter. This ensures that students do not miss the application of the theoretical knowledge and gain practical exposure to clinical settings at an early stage of the medical course.
Unlike the National Eligibility cum Entrance test, IMAT also tests logical reasoning. The test usually consists of 5 sections. The first section contains reading skills and general knowledge, including passages that test candidates ' ability to understand arguments and their general knowledge.
Although many consider this section irrelevant, MUR insists that these sections should exist to test candidates’ knowledge apart from preliminary subjects to ensure they are competent to recognise that external factors are essential for clinical practice.
This test is primarily conducted for admission to English-taught courses, as it is conducted in English. 16 universities in Italy offer English-taught medical courses to international students. As international students come from all across the world, they all need a common standard language to ensure fair competition for the admissions process. Also, the eligibility criteria require international students to learn English in order to understand the subjects better.
These are the top 16 universities in Italy that accept the IMAT score:
Note: Indian students intending to pursue MBBS in Italy should only choose English-taught medical courses as the National Medical Commission recognises these courses as valid.

For all the public universities in Italy, it is compulsory to evaluate students with a common standardised test, because all candidates applying to these colleges must be evaluated fairly. Any unfair measure can deter the reputation of MUR and Italian educational institutes
For this reason, the Government of Italy centralised all the seats of public medical universities and introduced the IMAT test. This test ensures that there's no unfair means of evaluation, either in the format or by the marking scheme.
The exam is quite competitive, and students must be well-prepared before appearing for it. Subjects such as biology, physics and chemistry often require more depth than assumed. So, it is advised that students revise the subjects to cover the syllabus and comprehend better.
Students outside Europe might face difficulty qualifying for the exam, as they are admitted to their first-choice universities and have no further opportunity to choose a second option. In this case, most of the time, the seats are filled with EU students, leaving little hope for non-EU students.
