Indian students often calculate their GPA from SGPA in their previous course of study to apply to US universities. It is a complex yet significant exercise for them as the Indian educational system is based on 10-point grading whereas the American educational system is solely dependent on a 4-point GPA scale. Hence, getting to know about SGPA, CGPA, and GPA is important to evaluate an aspirant’s academic performance. Knowing how to calculate GPA from SGPA or conversion of 10 CGPA to 4 GPA helps in equal academic evaluation of an Indian candidate with a US student.
Students often use academic tools such as GPA to CGPA, and CGPA to SGPA calculators available online to estimate their averages. Read the article below to learn more about the aspects involved in how to calculate GPA from SGPA.
Before getting to know how to calculate CGPA from SGPA or GPA from SGPA, one must have a deep understanding of these terms. Here, we have mentioned the meaning of SGPA, CGPA, and GPA for reference. We have also mentioned the processes involved in how to calculate SGPA and CGPA.
SGPA full form is the Semester Grade Point Average. This grading scale of measure is used to evaluate the candidate's academic performance during a particular semester for all the courses. It is measured on a 10-point scale. The way may vary; however, students generally
calculate SGPA by adding the product of credits and grade points of each subject and then dividing it by total credit points.
Here, we have given a step-by-step process to know ‘how is SGPA calculated’.
Credit of each subject*grade of each subject= grade point
Add the grade points of all subjects= Total grade points
Add the credits of each subject separately= Total Credit Points
Divide the total grade points with the total credit points
Note: students get grade points as per their merit in a specific subject and credit refers to the time duration of the class course plus the homework.
Subjects | Credits | Grades | Grade Points (credits*grades) |
Subject A | 4 | 9 | 36 |
Subject B | 3 | 8 | 24 |
Subject C | 2 | 7 | 14 |
Subject D | 2 | 8.8 | 17.6 |
Total | 11 | 32.8 | 91.6 |
SGPA= Grade points/total credits
= 91.6/11
=8.32

CGPA Full Form is the Cumulative Grade Point Average. This grade-measuring scale is used to evaluate the overall academic performance of the aspirant during the academic term. It is based on a 10-point system, unlike GPA which is a 4-point based grading measure. Here comes a necessity to convert a 10 Point CGPA to 4 Point GPA for applying to US Universities.
Here, we have given a step-by-step process to know ‘how is CGPA calculated’.
Find out the grades from each subject and add them= total grades
CGPA= Total grades/number of subjects

Subject B | 8 |
Subject C | 9 |
Subject D | 8 |
Total | 34 |
CGPA= Total grades/total number of subjects
= 34/4
=8.5

GPA full form is Grade Point Average. It demonstrates the student’s overall performance during a semester or an academic term. This 4-point GPA score is a mandatory requirement to cater for the majority of universities abroad, especially in the USA. Hence, a need to know how to calculate GPA from SGPA emerges for international students. GPA is calculated by either CGPA or GGPA. We will understand how to calculate GPA from CGPA and GPA from SGPA in the later part of the article.

There are different methods to calculate GPA from SGPA. It is quite difficult to convert SGPA to GPA for international students; however, the right method can help them to find out their grades easily. Calculating CGPA from SGPA is a simple and straightforward process for international students. It works on finding averages. Generally, students divide the total SGPA earned during each semester by the number of semesters in the specific term/year/duration.
Here, we have given a step-by-step process to learn ‘how to calculate CGPA from SGPA’.
Find out the SGPA of each semester and add them to find the sum of SGPA
Divide the sum of SGPA by the total number of semesters in a term
Hence, CGPA = Sum of SGPA / Total Semesters
Semester | SGPA |
Semester 1 | 9.9 |
Semester 2 | 8.6 |
Semester 3 | 7.8 |
Semester 4 | 8.9 |
Total | 35.2 |
CGPA= Total SGPAs /total semesters
=35.2/4
=8.8
International students can now convert the CGPA obtained from SGPA to GPA. It ensures the student’s evaluation for admission on equal grounds. Converting CGPA to GPA is one of the common needs for students seeking to study abroad, especially in top US universities. Understanding how to convert CGPA to GPA can also be important for academic and career opportunities.
Here, one can check out the step-by-step process to learn how to convert a 10 CGPA to 4 GPA.
Divide the aspirant’s CGPA with 10
Multiply it with 4
The outcome is GPA.
So, GPA= (CGPA/10)*4
Students | CGPA | CGPA/10 | GPA= Outcome*4 |
A | 8.9 | 0.89 | 3.56 |
B | 9.2 | 0.92 | 3.68 |
C | 7.4 | 0.74 | 2.96 |

All three SGPA, CGPA, and GPA are used to evaluate a student’s academic performance. These may vary based on certain factors such as scaling measures, acceptances, score requirements, and more. Here, we have provided an overview of the basic differences between SGPA, CGPA, and GPA in the table below:
Particulars | SGPA | CGPA | GPA |
Full form | Semester Grade Point Average | Cumulative Grade Point Average | Grade Point Average |
Usage | This is for grading a student during one semester | It is used to evaluate student’s academic outcomes for the whole academic term. | GPA can be used to evaluate a specific subject or semester or term |
Scale point | Varies 10 or 100 | 10 | 4 |
Grading duration | Specific to a semester | Overall academic result | For a specific duration |
Formula | Grade points/total credits | Total grades/total number of subjects | (Average grades/10)*4 |
Recognition | Majorly in Indian universities and more | Indian colleges | US universities and other foreign institutions |
There are various reasons why international students are required to calculate GPA from SGPA or CGPA as per the provided weighted average. A few of these include the following:
Assessing students on equal grounds: To provide a standard and fair evaluation for all students as per the university educational system. The majority of universities have 4-point GPA grading system.
Application requirements: There may be a requirement stated by the university to demonstrate the academic records in GPA format. For this international students require to convert SGPA or CGPA to GPA.
Scholarship Eligibility: Some merit-based scholarships are offered based on the academic GPA of the candidate. For this, CGPA or SGPA convert to GPA is required to demonstrate.
Internship opportunities: The agency or organisation may ask for a GPA score of the candidate before placing them for internships, hackathons and other career opportunities.
One can convert SGPA in GPA by firstly converting the SGPA into CGPA and then converting the CGPA into GPA. The formula for the same are the total SGPAs /total semesters for CGPA and then (CGPA/10)*4 for GPAs.
7.6 CGPA in GPA is approximately 3.04 GPA. First,7.6 is divided by 10 and we get 0.76. Then, it is multiplied by 4 to get 3.04.
SGPA and GPA are similar but not exactly the same. GPA is the average grade point obtained over a specific period, which could be a semester, an academic year, or the entire duration of a course whereas SGPA is the average grade point during a semester.
7.5 CGPA in GPA is approximately 3.00 GPA. First,7.5 is divided by 10 and we get 0.75. Then, it is multiplied by 4 to get 3.00.
8.5 CGPA in GPA is approximately 3.4 GPA. First,7.5 is divided by 10 and we get 0.85. Then, it is multiplied by 4 to get 3.4.
