Although in India, universities, schools and many educational institutes accept the CGPA as well as the percentage. However, students who want to study abroad need to convert their percentage to CGPA for major countries like the USA, UK, Canada and more.

Hence, due to the high acceptance of the CGPA, let us learn about CGPA and how to convert percentage in CGPA and visa-versa.

What is a CGPA?

The CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average, which is used to measure the academic performance of the student in a specific course or academic year.

It is the most convenient grading system that allows institutes to evaluate and select applicants without any complications of ranking. A CGPA is the average of all the GPAs achieved in a particular subject.

The CGPA can either be graded (A, B, C, D, E or F) or on scale points (from 0.0 to 10.0) or both. There is a simple formula to convert percentage to CGPA; we need to divide the gained percentage by 9.5 to evaluate the CGPA. This method is used on CBSE and several other boards as a percentage to CGPA converter.

In addition, if the university requires a percentage as their entry requirement and the previous institute used the grading method, the student can change CGPA into percentage by multiplying the obtained grade score by 9.5.

Ever wonder why 9.5 is used as a CGPA converter?

In India, the total marks are generally based on a scale of 100, out of which the average mark attained by the top rankers (score holders) is 95 based on the data evaluated by the examination boards. Hence, 9.5 is chosen for the 10-point scale. The 10-point scale is mostly used in India and some Eastern countries. While countries like the USA and Canada use a 4-point scale, most Australian universities use a grade scale of 7 points.

How to find CGPA from percentage?

Let's understand this with an example. Assume you achieve 86% overall in your academics and you need to convert percentage to CGPA. So, divide the obtained number by 9.5, resulting in approximately 9 to 9.1 CGPA.

Similarly, if the university requires the percentage, you can change CGPA into percentage by multiplying the score by 9.5.

For example, if the student scores 6 CGPA in the academic year, then the percentage will be 57% (6*9.5).

This is the only method used to evaluate the result in the percentage to CGPA calculator.

If the student receives letter grades in the academic scorecard, then they can evaluate the UGC-approved grade points from the detailed table below

Grades (letters)

Grade Points

O (outstanding)

10

A+ (Excellent)

9

A (Very good)

8

B+ (Good)

7

B (Above average)

6

C (Average)

5

P (Pass)

F (Fail)

Now, we’ll compare the CGPA to GPA, as it is required if the student is applying to study abroad. Major countries like the US, UK and Canada need a GPA on a scale of 4, but in India, the grading system runs on a 10-point scale. Here, we will figure out how to convert a 10 Point CGPA to GPA.

The formula to calculate CGPA to GPA is listed belo

For 10-scale CGPA to 4-scale GPA.

4 point GPA = (CGPA scored /batch toppers CGPA)*4

For example, suppose you have scored 8 CGPA, then the score on 4 point GPA will be 3.2

  • GPA= (8/10)*4

  • GPA= 3.2

From the 10-point CGPA to the 7-point GPA

7 point GPA = (CGPA scored/highest CGPA)*7

For example: if the CGPA is 5 on a 10-point scale, then the GPA on a scale of 7 will be 3.5

  • GPA= (5/10)*7

  • GPA= 3.5

There are some more ways to calculate the grade points, like if the student needs their semester grades. Then, they can convert their percentage to SGPA or GPA. Before going forward with how to find percentage from SGPA, we need to understand the SGPA and its benefits.

What is SGPA?

The SGPA is known as the semester grade point average. The SGPA is calculated based on semesters, which is later used to calculate the overall grade of the student in the academic year. The SGPA is used to calculate the individual semester or term's academic performance.

Benefits of SGPA

Students can calculate the SGPA to get a detailed view of their academic performance in each semester or the particular session they need to know and later they can also convert SGPA into a percentage to calculate the approximate percentage obtained in the particular semester. It is the average of grades or scores achieved on subjects per the credit hours in a single semester.

This will help them to focus, particularly on their academic growth, as well as encourage the students to track their progress and enhance their overall performance by setting up their goals.

SGPA is considered a significant method because if the student achieves a good SGPA, their CGPA will automatically be enhanced and they will have a higher chance of being selected for the desired courses or institute.

A lot of institutes provide the SGPA to their students, and to evaluate the percentage of semesters, many students find difficulty. Whereas, calculating SGPA to percentage is a smooth and easy task. Let's comprehend how to find percentage from SGPA with the help of a table. For this, we first have to evaluate the SGPA.

Semester 1

Credit Hours

Grade Points

Subject A

2

6

Subject B

4

8

Subject C

3

7

Subject D

9

Formula to calculate SGPA

  • Calculate the total points achieved; the sum of all points (Credit Hours* Grade Points)

  • Then, divide the total points by the total credit hours to get the SGPA.

Example: The point for subject A is 12 (2*6); similarly, for subjects B, C and D, it is 32, 21, and 54, respectively.

Now, add all the points, 12+32+21+54 Which is 12+32+21+54.

Put the sum in the formula to calculate the SGPA.

  • SGPA= sum of all the points/ sum of credit hours

  • SGPA=119/15

  • SGPA= 7.9

How to convert SGPA into percentage?

To convert the SGPA into a percentage, we have to multiply the SGPA scored in all the semesters (sum of semesters studied) or individual semesters by 10 and then subtract 7.5 from the obtained number. This formula is used as the SGPA to percentage calculator

Example 1: suppose the SGPA of the 1st semester is 8.5. Then the SGPA to percentage will be.

  • Percentage= (SGPA*10)-7.5

  • Percentage= (8.5*10)-7.5

  • Percentage= 85-7.5

  • Percentage= 77.5%

Therefore, the percentage of the first semester is 77.5%

Example 2: In this example, we will evaluate the overall percentage of all the semesters.

  • Percentage= ( sum of semesters*10) - 7.5

  • Suppose the total SGPA is 8.9

  • Then, (8.9*10)-7.5

  • The overall percentage is 81.5%

Example 3: calculating the total percentage from the semester scorecards and evaluating the CGPA as well.

The sum of total marks is 500

Calculate the percentage of first-semester scorecards by applying the percentage formula.

  • Percentage: (Marks Obtained/Total Marks) * 100.
  • Percentage of first semester: (379/500) * 100

Percentage of first semester: 75.8%

Now, let's evaluate the percentage of the second semester from the below scorecard:

Semester 2 scorecard

Subject 3

Subject 4

Subject 4

The total marks obtained in semester 2 is 415

  • Percentage: (Marks Obtained/Total Marks) * 100.
  • Percentage of first semester: (415/500) * 100

Percentage of first semester: 83%

Then, the total percentage of the whole academic year is calculated as the sum of the total marks obtained in the first semester and second semester from the sum of the total marks of both semesters and then the result is multiplied by 100 to evaluate the overall percentage.

  • Overall Percentage: (794/1000) * 100

Total Percentage: 79.4%

Now, to calculate the CGPA of the obtained overall percentage, divide the achieved percentage by 9.5.

CGPA: achieved percentage/ 9.5

CGPA: (79.4/9.5)

CGPA: 8.35789
