for international student applicants. We will explore how to convert your percentage into

GPA to apply for international universities.

What is GPA?

GPA or the grade point average is a method to calculate your academic marks. It is an aggregate or the average of your scores that you have accumulated for the stipulated period. Your GPA score allows you to compare your score with the results of others. The GPA score helps the assessor of your application to gauge your academic potential.

The GPA is a widely accepted calculation method which is accepted in major countries of the world especially if you wish to study in the US or study in Canada. It is also used in countries in Europe and Australia when assessing the application of students. Many countries consider the GPA as the common standard to assess a student’s academic performance.

Converting percentage into GPA

Converting the percentage score into GPA is done by dividing the average grade of the student with the total number of credit hours the student has attended during the stipulated time period.

Compared to the GPA scoring system used in the United States and various countries around the world, the Indian scoring system adheres to two main approaches, namely the percentage system or the 10 point GPA method. It is important to understand these two methods in order to become familiar with how to convert percentage to GPA.

Percentage system

In the percentage method, the performance over a period of time is converted into percentages and divided into four divisions.

Percentage obtained

Division

75 % and above

Distinction

60-75 %

First Division

50-60 %

Second Division

40-50 %

Third Division

On the other hand, the letter grades of the 10-scale GPA are associated with points. For example, a grade point of 9 results in an "A" grade. Furthermore, this system is very similar to the international GPA method which is on the 4.0 scale. If we go by this method, scoring 95% will give you A grade which indicates a score of 4.0, a score of 85% will be equal to B, i.e 3.0 and C as 2.0 and D is equal to 1.0.

GPA calculation for different grading systems

A four grade point system is widely used in the United States. A candidate who wants to calculate their GPA simply divides the percentage by 100 and multiplies by 4.For example, if a candidate scored 80%, they would need to divide 80 by 100 and multiply by 4, resulting in a GPA of 3.2.

There are many other countries that use a 10 point GPA system and it is also commonly used in Indian universities. To convert your percentage into GPA out of 10, you must simply multiply the percentage by 9.5 or GPA is equal to percentage divided by 9.5.

Let's say you had an 85% score in your exam. So when you are applying to US universities, you may be required to submit your academic results in the form of a GPA in the application. Therefore, converting the percentage to GPA out of 10 allows the person assessing your application to compare your score to that of students who have graduated from schools in the United States or other parts of the world. To convert this percentage to a GPA of 10, simply divide the 85% percentage by 9.5.

Benefits of using the GPA calculation method

The GPA is a widely accepted method of calculation in many countries and is a popular method to assess a student’s performance in a particular term or semester. If your GPA score is above average it gives you a better chance of being accepted by universities. A good GPA score improves your chances of getting a scholarship.

A good GPA is considered as a positive point by employers especially if you are applying for a job as a fresher.

These are the various advantages of having a good GPA, ensure that you have a decent GPA score in order to get into the best universities abroad
