International Medical Admissions Test, abbreviated as IMAT, is an entrance test conducted for Italian public universities. Designed by the Italian Ministry (MUR), it assesses biology, chemistry, maths, physics, and logical reasoning. The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions with a 100-minute time limit. This exam prioritises logic and analytical application over memorisation of the subject, so students need to understand concepts and their practical relevance, rather than just cramming the subject matter.
The exam is quite competitive, and students must be well-prepared before appearing for it. Students outside Europe might face difficulty qualifying for the exam, as they would be allowed admission to only first-choice universities, and no further opportunity would be given to choose a second option. In this case, most of the time, seats are filled by EU students, leaving little hope for non-EU students.

Subjects in MBBS courses demand a high level of focus and a comprehensive approach, as they require coherence across the biological sciences. In order to understand the subjects effectively, students need to be proficient in the language that is used for communication and instruction. This is why English-taught courses are necessary, as most Indian students have English as their primary academic language.
Students who study an English-taught MBBS course have a higher chance of clearing the FMGE exam and can practice in English-speaking countries.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
English Medical Schools in Italy require an IMAT score for admission to their medical courses. Although the NEET score is not necessary for admission, candidates who are planning to practice medicine in India should have a valid NEET score in order to be eligible for both the FMGE exam and the National Medical Commission registration.
Compared to NEET, IMAT is less competitive. The exam pattern is quite different from the NEET exam, as it tests logical reasoning and practical application of the theory. Recently, the test has been changed to be more subject-heavy.
As the IMAT has been changed to be subject-heavy, students can now score more in the test through memorisation. Even then, the cutoff is set higher to evaluate the student's ability to score in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Top universities like Milan and Pavia require a score within a range of 70-73, as they are more competitive, while the other universities may have cutoffs around 55-60.
