Plenty of Tech Jobs in USA by 2032

With the changes in H1B visa and other work permit changes and proposals in USA, the entire job market and international student community were confused and felt uncertain about their future. The 100k H1B visa fee will make the US companies more selective in choosing the international skilled worker. With the restrictions on the work permit and visa regulations, it can create a shortage of professionals in USA. According to a study by Georgetown University, it was revealed that by 2032, 5.25 million workers will be required across different fields to cover the labor shortage.

As per Nicole Smith, chief economist at Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW), 171 out of the 561 occupations are projected to experience skills shortages by 2032. Smith pointed out that managerial and professional roles, especially in management, teaching, nursing, and engineering, will be majorly affected. If this skills shortage continues, it will leave a negative impact on the American economy. NAFSA stated through their research that for every three international students, one job was created in the US during the 2023-2024 academic year. This means that international students helped support 378,175 jobs and contributed $43.8 billion to the US economy.

Required Changes in US Policies to Increase Job Opportunities

To increase job opportunities and to avoid labor shortages in the USA, the Trump administration must make the following changes.

1. Protect the OPT Program: After the H1B visa fee hike, the government also proposed to end the OPT (Optional Practical Training) program in USA. However, to increase job opportunities for international students in the USA, it is important to keep the OPT. As OPT also offers extension to STEM graduates, it will contribute greatly as emerging sectors in USA are AI, robotics, green tech, and quantum computing.

2. Improve the H1B Visa System: With the H1B visa fee hike, small-scale companies will be unable to recruit international skilled workers. Moreover, big tech companies in USA will also become selective in hiring global talent as they will be required to pay the 100k H1B visa fee for new applicants. Therefore, the increased H1B fee should be reduced. Moreover, the lottery system should be replaced by merit-based selection to employ skilled employees.

3. Create a Clear Pathway to Residency: For international students, it becomes a challenge to achieve residency in the USA. A Graduate Work Visa should be introduced that allows graduates to work for 3–5 years before applying for permanent residency. Also, fast-track green cards can help graduates in high-demand sectors like tech, healthcare, etc.
