Common Misconception: Qualifying score vs NEET Admission Cutoff

Students often get confused between the NEET cutoff and the qualifying score. Both the qualifying score and admission cutoff serve different purposes:

    • The NEET qualifying score is the score required to clear the exam. This implies that students who score 130-150 marks qualify for the exam. Qualifying for the exam does not guarantee admission to any medical college, as each college has its own cutoff marks.

Percentile: A percentile is a standard measure of all students’ scores.

The percentile is the number of qualified students above the total number of

students who appeared for the exam.

For example, if a student qualifies for the NEET exam with 140 marks, it means that

The student is above half of the students who took the test.

    • The NEET admission cutoff is the score required for college admission. Each medical college has its own cutoff marks set as a minimum standard for applicants.

Note: As foreign medical colleges consider the NEET score, they also consider qualifying marks different from the cutoff marks. Also, the NMC rule to practice in India requires one to qualify for NEET, and it is irrelevant to the cutoff marks for admission to foreign medical courses.
