NMC Guidelines for Indian Students: NEET requirement

    Purpose:

The purpose of the National Medical Council’s guidelines is to ensure that every medical college in India meets the minimum standards required to teach and foster medical students. These standards make medical students competent enough to work in a clinical environment. For this purpose, the National Medical Council also mandated the NEET qualification for Indian students who wish to study MBBS abroad. However, this mandate does not apply to admission to foreign medical colleges.

Although a few foreign colleges accept NEET scores for admission, this requirement will not hinder students from enrolling in these colleges, as it is considered nominal, and admission can be approved based on any proof of academic performance.

NEET qualification for medical practice in India: Minimum NEET score for MBBS abroad

The NEET qualification for students studying MBBS abroad allows them to practice in India after they graduate from a foreign medical school. The NEET eligibility for foreign-going Indian students is to prevent fraudulent medical degrees awarded without stringent regulations. As a few foreign medical colleges consider the NEET score, they also set qualifying marks different from the cutoff marks. Also, the NMC rule to practice in India requires one to qualify for NEET, and it is irrelevant to the cutoff marks for admission to foreign medical courses.

NEET score for admission to Foreign medical colleges: What is the minimum NEET score required for MBBS admission?

A few foreign colleges and universities accept the NEET score for admission, but they are not solely recognised for merit or enrollment. Countries with medical colleges usually have their own entrance exams to evaluate students’ knowledge of preliminary subjects. The other foreign medical colleges enrol students based on their 12th-grade test scores. For this reason, the NEET scores are not mandatory for admission to foreign medical colleges. Moreover, the majority of foreign colleges consider NEET scores nominal, as evaluation is based on primary eligibility criteria.

    Entrance Exams

Each country has its own entrance exam to assess students for admission to the medical colleges and universities. All the top countries, such as the USA, UK, China, and Italy, consider students based on their performance in entrance exams. Below is a list of medical entrance exams to study abroad:

IMAT: International Medical Admission Test is an exam conducted by the Educational Ministry of Italy for students who are planning to pursue a medical course

MCAT: Medical College Admission Test is conducted in the USA and Canada. All students need to clear their pre-medical course to appear for this exam

NMAT: National Medical Admission Test is conducted in the Philippines after completing a pre-medical course for admission to the MD course.

UCAT: Universal Clinical Aptitude Test is a test conducted in both the UK and Australia to test candidates’ efficiency after their pre-medical course for admission to medical colleges.

CSCA: China Scholastic Competency Assessment is a test conducted in China by the Educational Ministry of China to evaluate students’ background knowledge in maths, biology, physics, and chemistry.

TMS & TestAS: Test for Medical Studies and Test for Academic Studies are tests for students who intend to pursue a medical course in Germany. TMS is for the medical course, while TestAS is for all students to assess general and subject-specific abilities.

Note: Certain countries, such as Canada, Australia, and the Philippines, require a pre-medical course for admission to the medical colleges. It is essential to check their official website or prospectus to confirm their course structure and eligibility criteria.
