There are a few mandatory costs for international students. These costs include formalities concerning the local regulations and students’ needs. Here is a full breakdown of the hidden costs of studying MBBS abroad:
Application fees: The majority of foreign medical universities charge an application fee separately from their tuition fees. This fee is non-refundable and charged to confirm the application. It is advised to pay the application fee directly to the selected university to avoid unnecessary service charges from consultants.

Note: Some universities charge one-time fees that are deposited at the time of admission. This fee is a one-time deposit and will not be refunded.
Mandatory Insurance & Visa Renewals: All Indian students studying MBBS abroad need local health insurance that can cost 30,000 to 1,00,000 INR. Students' visa renewals cost varies by country, as each country charges different fees

Academic expenses: textbooks and clinical instruments like a stethoscope (₹2,500 - ₹8,000), dissection kit (₹1,500–₹3,500), diagnostic sets, and lab coats will cost around ₹8,000-₹20,000 in total. Specialised textbooks (Grey's Anatomy, Harrison's Principles, Robbins Pathology) cost ₹3,000-₹8,000 per volume. A complete set of Year 1 textbooks costs around ₹20,000-₹35,000. These fees are discussed nowhere, unless inquired through a specific source. Universities also charge exam fees and clinical training completion certificates, and these institutional surcharges add ₹15,000-₹40,000 per year.
Paperwork for departure includes Visa Processing, Biometric Enrollment, and Medical Clearances. Biometric enrollment at official visa application centres adds ₹1,500 - ₹2,500, and an HIV-negative test (within three months of application), TB test, and country-specific vaccinations collectively cost around ₹5,000 - ₹12,000. This is the total pre-departure cost spanning around: ₹1.5 ₹2 lakhs, a figure that appears in no brochure.

The FMGE passing rate for foreign medical graduates is between 10-20% it the test is taken without coaching. Students who prepare for the FMGE exam in 1st year often achieve better results and lower the failure rate.
