    Direct admission in MBBS abroad

Indian students seeking admission to MBBS abroad must meet eligibility criteria set by foreign medical colleges and universities whilst clearing the entrance exam. In contrast, the majority of foreign medical colleges and universities enrol students regardless of their academic record or marks, while excluding the entrance exam.

The typical direct admission process includes these steps:

    1. Evaluation of academic performance: Although most foreign medical colleges do not consider marks for admission, students are required to meet the minimum marks eligibility criteria. Usually, foreign medical institutions require 70% or above, depending upon their curriculum.

    2. Language proficiency test: Foreign medical colleges and universities in English-speaking countries or institutions that offer English-taught MBBS courses also require a language proficiency test, such as IELTS or TOEFL. This is to evaluate the candidate’s language proficiency in comprehension, speaking and writing.

    3. Statement of Purpose: This is a crucial step in the admission process because, in the absence of an entrance exam requirement, the Statement of Purpose is the only component that fills the gap left by a lack of academic records. The purpose of SOP is to convey the intention of applying students and their endeavour towards studying the MBBS course. For this reason, SOPs often outweigh academic records or marks as a measure of passion over mere marks. Students are advised to curate their SOPs meticulously to increase chances of admission.

    4. Letters of recommendation: This is also a significant aspect that increases the chances of admission to foreign medical colleges and universities. LORs are suggested to include testimony of a credible individual, typically a college professor or the dean, to affirm the applicant’s academic performance. This improves the chances of admission and enhances the overall application.

    5. Interview: Candidates are interviewed to assess their overall profile. These interviews include questions regarding points of interest and the reason for admission.
