Top Scholarships in Canada: With over 30000 Indian students, Canada is one of the most sought after destinations for Indian students planning to study abroad. This is primarily due to the advantages that Canada offers to students in terms of quality education, cost advantages along with a multicultural environment.  If you are planning to pursue your education in Canada, it always helps to know about the Top scholarships in Canada for Indian students.


Here, we bring you a list of top scholarships in Canada applicable for Indian students:


1.  Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Programme

Funded by the Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Programme presents opportunities to international students who want to pursue studies and research in Canada.

The scholarships are only offered to study at recognized public Canadian institutions and affiliated research institutes. Under this programme, Graduate Students Exchanges are hosted by Canadian institutions for a period of five or six months. The scholarship covers the following:

  • Living expenses
  • Transportation cost

  • Sundry expenses

2.  Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships present research prospects for international students who want to explore research opportunities in Canada.

The scholarship mainly covers areas such as Health research, Natural sciences, engineering, Social sciences and humanities. Upto 70 fellowships are awarded under this programme which is provided for a period of two years. The scholarship covers a stipend of $70,000 per year and does not include funds for travel and other purpose.


How to apply: Aspirants have to be endorsed by the host institutions for the scholarship. In addition, they also have to apply for the scholarship. The deadline for application is generally in September every year. The results are announced by January next year.


3.  Trudeau Scholarships

The Trudeau Foundation offers scholarships to talented doctoral candidates who intend to pursue research in social sciences and humanities program. The research also has to be linked to the four major themes of the Trudeau Foundation i.e., Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada in the World and People in their Natural Environment. Upto 15 scholarships are announced each year for both Canadian and international students.

The scholarship covers the following:

  • Up to $60,000 per scholar annually

  • Travelling allowance of $20,000 (included in the annual amount)

How to apply: The application forms are usually available by September and the results are announced by May the next year.


4. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are aimed at attracting high quality research personnel to Canada. Announced in 2008, the scholarship is funded by three federal agencies, they are: Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, To be considered for a Vanier Scholarship, you have to be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation.


Below are the highlights of the Scholarship:

  • Scholars are awarded $50,000 per year

  • It is offered for a period of 3 years.

  • Up to 167 scholarships are awarded annually

How to apply:

Applications are initiated in one of two ways: 

  1. Student can inform the selected university of their intent to apply for the Vanier CGS program; or

  2. The university initiates the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.

5.  The Bentley Cropping Systems Fellowship

This scholarship is offered every two years to students from developing countries pursuing master’s, doctoral or post –doctoral programmes in Canada. Applicant should be a graduate student with a university degree in agriculture, forestry, or biology, and wish to undertake applied, on-farm research.

Below are the highlights of the Scholarship:

  • The value of the award is up to CA$30,000.

  • Award is presented for 18 to 24 months.

  • Fellowship holders will commit to provide IDRC with three brief progress reports per year

How to apply: Applications are available online. Aspirants also have to submit a research proposal focusing on very simple cropping-systems research that can benefit small farmers in developing countries, especially rural women farmers.

The deadline for application is generally towards the end of September or beginning of October.


6. Mitacs Elevate

The Mitacs Elevate scholarship programme offers training to postdoctoral fellows in undertaking industry related research work. The scholarship is offered for a period of two years.

Below are the highlights of the Scholarship:

  • $115,000 research award over two years

  • The fellows receive top-tier R&D management training worth $15,000

  • In addition to their research project, fellows spend from one to two days per month participating in training activities.

How to apply: Aspirants have to provide 3 letters of support alongwith the completed application form. They are:

  1. Letter of support from the proposed academic supervisor

  2. Letter from a former supervisor or person familiar with the fellow’s research expertise

  3.  Letter from an eligible partner organization of Mitacs programme.

7. Sauvé Scholars Program

Introduced in 2003, the Sauvé Scholars Program offers scholars an opportunity to spend nine months in Montreal and benefit from McGill University’s academic programs and other resources while trying to drive change in the world. The scholars are chosen on the mentioned selection criteria:

  • Initiative

  • Motivation

  • Vision

  • Imagination

  • Demonstrated communication skills

  • Awareness of international and domestic issues

  • A strong desire to effect change

Below are the highlights of the programme:

  • The scholarship is open for 14 young leaders.

  • The programme allows exchange of ideas and experience, supported by communal life

  • Scholars can have access to McGill University’s  academic resourses

  • Scholars should be between 23 to 30 years of age and atleast have an undergraduate degree.

How to apply: You can submit your application at the Sauvé foundation website. Applications generally open in August.


8.  CIFAR Global Scholars

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) is targeted at individuals who have completed their PhD and displayed outstanding research potential. The global scholars, who are inducted as fellows within the global academy, are provided opportunities for professional growth through collaboration with researchers in Canada and around the world.

Below are highlights of the programme:

  • The scholarship is provided for 2 years.

  • Scholars holding appointments as postdoctoral fellows receive an annual stipend of $70,000

  • Scholars are also provided with health benefits

  • $5,000 is also provided as research support

How to apply:

Global scholars are appointed under the following categories:

  1. Postdoctoral Fellowship

  2. Junior Faculty Appointment

  3. Leave of Absence from a Faculty Appointment

  4. Disbursement of Funds

  5. Parental Leave Policy

  6. Transition to Global Scholar Alumni

Shortlisted applicants are called for an interview following which the results are declared after approximately 2.5 months.
