Indian students can choose foreign colleges and universities for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Candidates who complete their 12th grade can pursue a diploma or bachelor's abroad, and undergraduates can pursue postgraduate studies. Although foreign colleges and universities have different grading systems, they accept grades from previous qualifications as part of the eligibility criteria.
Moreover, both undergraduate and postgraduate courses have qualifying examinations to evaluate students' academic performance with regard to a particular course’s rigour. For undergraduate courses, the SAT (Schoolastic Admission Test) is required, and for postgraduate courses, the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) varies by subject and is required to assess candidates.
Students planning to pursue higher education should meet the following eligibility criteria in order to be eligible for admission. Although each course has its own criteria, the minimum requirements for admission remain the same.
Age limit:
Undergraduate:
Unlike Medicine, courses in other subjects do not set an age limit for candidates.
That said, all candidates need to complete 12 years of formal education to be admitted to undergraduate courses. For this reason, students usually join soon after high school, where they are 17 years old by the time of completion.
Postgraduate:
Students should be qualified with an undergraduate degree. As the age requirement is met at the undergraduate level, there is no age limit for postgraduate courses.
Study Abroad Qualification:
Undergraduate:
For Indian students, the minimum percentage required in Class 12 varies depending on the particular college the candidate is considering. Top colleges such as Harvard and Yale require an aggregate of above 90% in Class 12. Moreover, these top colleges consider entrance examination scores as a primary evaluation for admission, while Class 12 marks are a minimum eligibility criterion.

Course selection and Online application:
Students are supposed to select their course based on their prior qualifications. Even though a few courses allow students from various disciplines, science and technology require students to study relevant subjects in both high school and undergraduate studies.
Every course is related to a particular subject department, and each subject department has its own admission portal. Students should fill the application form on the portal and submit it with the required documents. This ensures completion of the application process.
Note: All the application portals require students to submit mandatory documents before submitting the application form. It is advised to acquire all mandatory documents in advance to avoid delayed submission. Moreover, a few colleges open a 2nd window for test score submission, which is considered part of the application process.
These are the documents required for an application to foreign colleges and universities.
Academic Transcripts: Official transcripts from the school are needed to apply to foreign universities. Both the original and the notarised copies in the foreign language are required.
LORs: A minimum of 2 Letters of recommendation are required for students. They may need to either upload them to the website portal by themselves or request their professors to upload them.
Income certificate: This is essential for self-funded students. Universities use parents' income and the financial status of students to provide financial aid or scholarships if needed. Also, a few countries consider this certificate as proof of substantial income, allowing students to stay for the course duration.
Proof of address: This verifies the applicant’s permanent residence in their home country. Moreover, the residence should be at least 10 years old to confirm the candidate’s nationality.
Guardian Attestation: A Guarantee letter from the guardian is needed for students below 18 years of age. The guardian should take care of the student in times of emergency, including financial assistance and residential requirements. In countries like China, the guardian should be a citizen of the country and should be financially able to support the student.
Birth certificate: A birth certificate is also required to verify the candidate's identity and date of birth.
Translation of Documents: Notarised translation if the original documents are not in English.
Note: The application process is entirely different from the visa application. The submission of the application initiates the admission process, which further results in an acceptance letter for visa processing. Moreover, the visa application needs additional documents such as medical reports, a no-objection certificate, and passports.
Scholarships are provided to students based on their merit. This is to enable meritorious students to study courses with high fees. Moreover, for students who cannot afford tuition fees, financial aid is offered, considering their financial background. However, it is important to note the amount of money being covered by scholarships, as most scholarships do not waive full tuition fees. Therefore, students should know all the details about scholarships before applying for one.
