As per the Open Doors report, a record number of more than 331,602 Indian students enrolled in US universities in 2023-24 academic year, showcasing the popularity of US institutions amongst Indians. Despite Donald Trump taking office as 47th President of the United States, the highest number of Indian students have gone to the US for higher studies. This marks a staggering 23% rise from the previous year. Right now, Indians make up the largest source of international students in the US after China. As per the report, Indians represent 29% of the total international student population in the US, which is 1.11 million.
As Trump takes over as the 47th US President, there are a lot of concerns among international students and professionals regarding his stance on stricter immigration policy. During his previous tenure, there were stringent visa checks and fewer visa caps. Despite these concerns, the record Indian students' numbers show that the US still dominates the higher education amongst the international students.

"While we acknowledge the reported visa issues, it’s important to recognise the enduring strengths of the U.S. higher education system," says Sonal Kapoor, Chief Commercial Officer at Prodigy Finance. "The U.S. has a unique combination of academic excellence, diversity of programs and global recognition that continues to attract top talent from India."
As per the Immigration Council, majority of the Indian students are pursuing STEM courses in the US, which are also one of the highest job providers in the US. So, they also cater to the job market well. The F1 Visa allows STEM graduates to stay in the US for up to 3 years after completing their higher studies visa OPT. This gives them ample time to find a suitable job and gain industry experience in the US.
The figures highlight that the US is still the topmost choice among Indian students for pursuing higher studies abroad. The quality education and top universities are a big draw for Indian students. Despite uncertainty around immigration policies and visa issues, US a top destination for Indian students looking for education abroad.

There are many ways to choose your university such as fees, the ranking of the university, which state it is located and scholarships. My suggestion is to choose your research focus and write academic papers. In the US, PhD in Commerce admission into the university depends on what you want to study (your area of research) and your already completed research papers.
