After the Trump administration announced the H1B visa fee hike, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis imposed a statewide ban on hiring foreign workers through the H1B visa program at public universities. He believes that institutions funded by taxpayers should focus on hiring American citizens rather than bringing in talent from abroad. The recent Florida ban on H1B visas states that all public universities in Florida must stop hiring faculty, researchers, and administrative staff on H1B visas. Institutions are now required to prioritize hiring US citizens and local residents. Universities that continue to employ H1B visa holders for staff roles may face funding reviews or penalties. The state intends to shift funds away from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs to support initiatives aimed at hiring American graduates. The Governor of Florida stated that if Americans can not fulfill the requirements in Florida, then it is a bigger issue that must be analyzed.
