The US Consulate General in Chennai has reopened their visa processing services from Thursday, October 23, 2025. After a period of pause for those applying for US visas in southern India, the services have finally resumed. Through a post on X, the US Consulate Chennai announced this news. Many students, professionals, and families who had their travel or immigration plans were paused temporarily can now continue getting their US visas. The pause on visas led to delays in visa processing for many which made them reschedule or even transfer their appointments to other US consulates in India. Now that services are resumed, applicants can once again attend interviews, submit their documents, and complete all the necessary steps in Chennai.

All applicants who have an appointment for October 23, 2025 can only visit the US Consulate in Chennai. However, appointments on October 22, 2025 will be rescheduled and notified with the new date and time. Moreover, the American Citizen Services will also be resumed from October 23, 2025. Note that the American Center Chennai, EducationUSA, and the United States-India Educational Foundation offices will still be closed to the public due to funding issues. For Indian nationals looking to apply for non-immigrant visas like tourist, student, or work visas through Chennai, they can apply at the US Consulate in Chennai.
On June 23, 2025, the Trump administration introduced stricter visa screening rules. They banned twelve countries from travelling to USA. Even though India was not part of the ban, US consulates stopped issuing visas for a brief period. Hence, Indian applicants have been experiencing delays. Moreover, the US administration introduced social media vetting for student visa applications. According to the new immigration rules in USA, applicants for F, M, or J visas must now make their social media accounts public as part of the vetting process. Now, the applications from Indian nationals for all visa types, including B1, B2 tourist visas, H1B visas, and F1 student visas, are still being processed. However, Indian visa applicants are still facing significant delays, as several US consulates in India are scheduling interview slots for after ten to twelve months.
