Former Indian Ambassador to the United States, Arun Singh, is urging Indian students to think ahead and have a backup plan. It is better to be prepared for alternative options than to be stranded by the sudden policy reforms in the countries you aim for. He also emphasized that students who do not want to lose a year or semester should start exploring their options. "It’s a good idea to have alternatives, maybe a course in India or in another country,” he suggested. For example, Ireland has seen an increase in student applications and visa approvals of 30-40 percent in 2025. However, Canada has faced a drop in study permit approvals, issuing only 96,015 permits to Indian students in early 2025. As compared to 2024, 121,070 permits were given in Canada. Mentioned below are different study abroad destinations that students are now aiming for.
Germany: In the academic year 2023-2024, Germany welcomed 49,008 Indian students. These were the highest in number in comparison to other countries.
Ireland: In the academic year 2023-2024, Ireland welcomed 9,000 Indian students. The enrollments in 20222-2023 were 7,000. Hence, there has been an increase in the number of indian students aiming to study in Ireland.
France: In recent years, the number of Indian students in France has increased. France is aiming to welcome 30,000 Indian students by the year 2030. In 2024, there were 8,536 Indian students; in 2023, the number was 7,484, and in 2022, the number of Indian students studying in France was 6,406.
UK: In the year 2024, UK witnessed 98,890 Indian student enrollments. Even though it has decreased from the previous year, UK is still a favorable destination for many study abroad aspirants.
Australia: In 2023, Indian student enrollment was 1,22,391. This resulted in India being the second largest contributor of international students. However, Australia planned on putting a cap on the international student enrollment in 2025, limiting the number to 2,70,000.
Sweden: Currently, there are approximately 2,500 Indian students in Sweden. More and more students are aiming to study in this emerging study abroad destination.
