Indian students who rely on part time jobs in US to support them financially are quitting their jobs amid the Donald Trump administration's strict immigration policies. With the 45th US President Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2025, Indian students fear the deportation risks. With the reforms in immigration policies resulting in more tightening laws, students are forced to quit their odd or part time jobs that are essential for survival during the intended stay of studies in USA. The major fear of deportation has intensified as Trump took office for the 2nd time and has started implementing various orders for tightening border security and removing illegal immigrants in USA.
Generally, students with F1 visa in US are allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week for on campus jobs. However, the majority of these students take up some undocumented and off campus jobs such as working in restaurants, gas stations, stores, delivering, baristas, babysitting, and others that help them cover their living expenses in USA. Students often take huge education loans to study in US universities creating a need to earn more to pay these loans. With the Trump immigration crackdown, Indian students are hesitant to take these odd jobs despite the financial necessities.
Some Indian students studying in USA have shared their personal experiences with Trump’s immigration crackdown escalating. Arjun is one of the graduate students in Illinois who supports himself for monthly expenses by working in a small cafe after college hours. He earns USD 7 per hour and works for around 6 hours daily. He borrowed USD 50,000 to study in USA as an education loan. However, he decided to quit this part time job because of Trump's deportation warnings.
Another student, Neha who is currently studying master's in New York has stopped working in her usual part time workplace. She was concerned about the randomly increased checks during work hours. She quit her job in US as she did not want to be deported back to India and jeopardise her future.
Another case has shown that this US deportation concern with Trump's inauguration has taken a toll on student’s mental health as well. One of the students in Texas, Rahul studying computer science at a university has shared that he has used all of his savings and is forced to borrow some money from his flatmates to survive. He is too ashamed to ask for money from his parents as they are already not in a good financial situation resulting in stress and anxiety.
As Donald Trump takes the oath of office to become the 45th president of US, Indian students are forced to quit their part time jobs in restaurants, gas stations, stores, etc because of the tightening of new US immigration policies. Now, students with F1 visa in USA are facing financial as well as mental breakdowns. They rely on their saving and borrowing from friends to meet the standard expenses in the country. With repaying education loan concerns and meeting the monthly expenses, Trump’s immigration crackdown escalates emotional stress.
Many Indian students quit part time jobs in USA amid deportation worries. They are feared by the rigid and tightened Trump immigration rules and policies to enhance border security and reduce the number of illegal immigrants in USA.
With various reform in the immigration policies in USA by Trump’s presidency, Indian students studying in US universities fears deportation. This has forced them to stop their part time jobs in USA despite the major financial necessity.
The off campus and undocumented jobs such as working in retail stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc are affected by Trump's deportation plans for 2025.
Students rely on their savings and borrow money from friends, roommates, and family to cover their monthly expenses in the country. This has also taken a toll on the mental and financial health of Indian students with F1 visas in USA because of quitting part time jobs due to Trump’s deportation plans.
