The impact of the new H1B visa hike from $2,000 - $5,000 to $100,000 has gained the attention of both the Tech sector in USA and India. Apart from this, Indian students planning or currently studying in USA are also impacted by this new change introduced by the Trump administration. This high-impact change in USA will largely affect the international tech talent coming to USA on H1B visa. In addition, international students who see an H1B visa as a pathway to enter the US job market often choose OPT training to work in USA. Amidst this new change, several companies will be mindful when hiring international talent, as every new H1B application will require a fee of $100,000. From this ongoing situation, countries like UK, Germany and Canada have gained benefits and have started to invite international skilled workers to work in their countries. These countries are offering flexible visa regulations, increased work permits and public invites. Read this article to understand how the UK, Germany and Canada are attracting Indian tech talent during the H1B visa fee hike.

Other countries like Germany, UK, Canada have shown genuine interest and invited Indian skilled workers to work in their country. For this, these countries have taken initiatives such as offering public invitations or opening visa slots for more applicants. China also initiated a K visa for international workers. Under this visa, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professionals are welcome to work in China. This new initiative will start on October 1, 2025. Below are the initiatives from other countries.
A few days after the new H1B visa hike was introduced in USA, Germany's ambassador released a video message focusing on Germany’s stable migration system. He believes the system in Germany is modern, reliable and predictable. He further invited highly skilled Indian workers to Germany. Apart from this, Germany offered 90,000 skilled visas to Indians. Previously, this number was 20,000. Skilled visas in Germany will no longer require the minimum salary requirement of €43,470, and will remove the German language requirement. This will ease the process of attaining the skilled worker visa in Germany.

A Canadian policy organisation, 'Build Canada', has suggested that Canada can be at an advantage from this new H1B 100k fee hike. If Canada provides a work permit for the potential or current H1B visa holders with an earning of $140,000 (C$200,000) salary and a three-year employment commitment, they can add to Canada’s GDP. This is an open invitation to Indian skilled workers aiming to work abroad. However, under this work permit, H1B holders can live in USA while having their US employment. Apart from this, the organisation also recommended that engineering and other tech professionals who will face the impact of the increased H1B visa fee be supported by Canada through the Global Talent Fund. This is a strategic move by Canada to be at an advantage from the new H1B visa rule.
Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer in UK, stated that USA is making it difficult to bring international talent to USA, but UK will make this process easier. The UK has reacted to the H1B visa fee hike by announcing that they are planning to expand its global talent and visa routes to make skilled visas flexible and accessible to international skilled workers. Additionally, the founder of Cleo, an AI startup company in UK has announced on its LinkedIn that they are open to complete visa sponsorship and relocation assistance for 100 positions. Similarly, Attio, another company in London, advertised available job options for international workers and is open to providing support with UK visa.
Even though there are alternatives available for potential and current H1B visa holders, the importance of the H1B visa was pretty high for Indian skilled workers. Google parent Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and IBM CEO Arvind Krishna came to USA as students and are now recognized globally. Students who invest a large amount of money to study in USA will be largely affected by this rule. Moreover, after completing graduation in USA, Indian students take OPT training which is a temporary work permit for 12 months. After completing their OPT, students use an H1B as a pathway to enter the US job market. With this increased fee, US companies will also be highly selective and will invest this huge fee of $100,000 in highly skilled workers or simply recruit from USA. Some other highly anticipated impacts of the increased H1B visa fees on indian students include:
High competition amongst international skilled workers
Reduction in sponsored US jobs
Uncertainty in the job market for international students
Limited work opportunities in USA for Indian students
Increased financial stress due to low ROI

There are many ways to choose your university such as fees, the ranking of the university, which state it is located and scholarships. My suggestion is to choose your research focus and write academic papers. In the US, PhD in Commerce admission into the university depends on what you want to study (your area of research) and your already completed research papers. You can begin your research by searching online for US universities offering PhD in Business Administration. One example is University of California Los Angeles (https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/degrees/phd-program/admissions#app-req) .
