: With over 20% of the international students studying engineering in USA, the programme is high up in the list of the most popular courses pursued by students enrolled in the country's universities. The reason behind this is simple. Engineering is not only the most sought after profession, it also leads to some of the highest paying careers in the world. According to American body, National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the average salary for engineering graduates in USA is just over $63, 000- among the highest in the world. Further Civil, Petroleum and IT engineers are some the highest paid engineering branches with Petroleum engineers starting with a salary of $80,000. However, before jumping on the returns, international students have to first consider the cost of studying engineering in the USA.

Engineering in USA- Tuition fees:

While very popular among international students, engineering in USA is also one of the most expensive courses of study. The average cost of studying engineering in USA can go upwards, $40,000 and that is only in terms of fixed academic charges. So, if you were to add costs like accommodation and living expenses, the cost could be above $60,000 annually. Also, for international students, the cost of pursuing an undergraduate course in engineering is heavier on the pocket compared to a graduate degree. The main reason being the duration of the courses, of course, as the tuition fees tend to be the same. An undergraduate programme in engineering in USA lasts for 4 years while a Masters course can go up to 2 years. So, if you club the living expenses along with the tuition fees, undergraduate degrees lean on the costlier side.

In terms of Masters, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers one of the costliest engineering programmes while institutes like UCLA and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign charge the least among the top 10 engineering colleges in the USA.

If you want to understand what it would really cost to study engineering in USA, then it is important to factor in elements like living expenses, accommodation, transportation costs and so on. Engineering course in USA - Cost of examinations:

There are many expenses that you have to take care of before starting your engineering course in USA. The first in line are examination costs. To study engineering in USA, aspirants need to take some standardised test mandatory for admission to the programmes. So, while students going for postgraduate studies have to take GRE, aspirants planning to pursue undergraduation have to take SAT.

GRE will cost students upwards of $205. Meanwhile, the two versions of SAT, SAT and SAT with essay, cost $45 and $57 respectively. For SAT, non-U.S students have to pay additional regional fee as well in additon to the normal registration fee. Then there is separte fee for students who take subject tests. For GRE, the cost of taking the subject test is around $150 and that for SAT is  $26. 

 

Besides GRE and SAT, international students planning to pursue engineering in USA also have to submit proof of English proficiency through IELTS and TOEFL score. While IELTS costs around $170 currently, the TOEFL registration fees is around $170- $220.
