Delhi Government Announces Fully Funded Ambedkar Scholarship To Study Abroad For Dalit Students

21 December 2024: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal introduced the Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship for Dalit students during a Saturday event at AAP headquarters. This scheme is aimed to offer full financial support for education abroad of Dalit students from India.

Delhi Chief Minister, Kejriwal announced the launch of Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship for Dalit students in Delhi. This fully funded scholarship is a great and powerful step by the Delhi government to cover tuition fees, travel costs, and living expenses of Dalit students during their higher education abroad journey.

In this significant move, Dr Ambedkar Scholarship is a way to ensure that deserving students belonging to the Dalit community can pursue higher education abroad at top universities in the world without any financial restrictions. This ensures that they get a world class education free of financial hurdles.

He further emphasizes that this initiative is a tribute to Dr BR Amberdkar, the father of the Indian Constitution and is designed to drive his belief in empowering education; and promoting global educational opportunities to Scheduled Caste Dalit students. This was a strong pursuit against the mockery by the BJP and Amit Shah about Ambedkar. Kejriwal quoted ‘Union Home Minister Amit Shah insulted and made fun of Babasaheb Dr Ambedkar in Parliament. Crores of people who love Ambedkar were deeply pained’

So, what is the eligibility to get this Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship for Dalit students? Simply, the scholarship is available to all Dalit students residing in Delhi who have secured admission to any of the foreign universities worldwide. Delhi chief has also mentioned that this scheme is open to eligible children of government employees. Although this initiative is declared openly, the application deadlines, how to apply, and the application portal details are yet to be announced.

This announcement of free study abroad scholarships for marginalised students from Delhi is a part of Kejriwal’s broader commitment to the transformative power of education and social welfare as a promise before the upcoming Delhi assembly elections.

After Kejriwal announced this scholarship for Dalit students, the head in charge of the National Information and Technology Department, BJP, Amit Malviya, stated his opinion on X. He mentioned that a similar promise had been made in 2019 when AAP government chief Kejriwal assured of financial aid to at least 100 students from the Dalit community every year. On that note, there should be approximately 500 students by now that have benefited; however, RTI revealed that only 5 students received financial support in the last 5 years. He further called Kejriwal the biggest fraud in the world as no promises were met despite spending crores on promotion of the scheme.
