January to September 2024 saw fewer students travelling to the United States of America, as the US F-1 student visa for Indian students has dropped by 38%. After recovering from the lockdown situations worldwide with Indian students again going to study in US, India is again witnessing a sharp turndown this year, reporting it to be the lowest post-pandemic level. This dip is the result of Trump tightening the US immigration process for international students, resulting in the change of international migration patterns. As per the reports, this year only 64,008 student visas for USA from India have been issued, whereas in 2023, over 103,495 students flew to America to study.
In the same year, Indian students occupied most of the seats for US universities (about 29.4%; that is a major part of the total student population in the USA). Reports also pointed out that the decline has been an aftereffect of the visa application delays and extended interviews. Simultaneously, there has also been a decrease in the number of student visas for Chinese students. It has dwindled by 8%, with just 73,781 visas issued in 2024.
Numerous factors, such as visa regulation changes, geopolitical tussle, etc., have contributed to the dwindling number of Indian students flying to America for higher studies.
Trump's reelection as US president has upended the global educational trend, especially for the Indian students. A survey states that “over 42% of international students now hesitate to consider the US as a study abroad destination amid the political tension and visa restrictions.”. Several reputed US universities, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and others have even issued advisory for international students to get back to the campuses before Trump takes on his presidential chair on January 20, 2025.
Amid the stricter visa regulations, international students are facing new challenges. As per the latest changes, no student can stay outside the US for over five consecutive months. This travel restriction has raised concerns, especially for those students who are enrolled in academic programs that require international mobility.
With time, Indian students have started getting higher access to domestic education, which is why they are not feeling the need to study abroad. Moreover, the educational institutions in India have made significant improvements in the quality of education along with being affordable, with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) even gaining global recognition. The lower cost of living, tuition fee, and better job opportunities in India are reasons why fewer students are considering the options of studying abroad.
Amid the escalating conflicts of the US with Russia and China, international students are paying the cost. As a result of the geopolitical dynamics, international students are facing stricter immigration policies and safety concerns that are stopping them from considering the US as a study abroad destination.
There is a gap between the demand and supply of visa slots, hyped up with delays in interview times. These reasons clearly answer the dwindling number of visa applicants this year. “While the US has always been a promising international student destination, students are considering other countries like Canada, the UK, Germany, and Australia now. The trajectory from visa application to approval has become challenging but isn’t unachievable, as we have hired significant resources to improve wait times in India," says the spokesperson of the US State Department.

There are many ways to choose your university such as fees, the ranking of the university, which state it is located and scholarships. My suggestion is to choose your research focus and write academic papers. In the US, PhD in Commerce admission into the university depends on what you want to study (your area of research) and your already completed research papers.
