THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025 has been released and they showcased the dominance of US and UK universities and struggle of Asia's leading universities globally in Arts and Humanities. Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject 2025 for 11 subjects has been out. The US is at the top in 9 out of 11 subjects, whereas, UK holds the top position for the other two. To everyone’s surprise, MIT has bagged the top slot for Arts, Humanities, Business and Social Sciences. This also helped in improving MIT's overall world university ranking for 2025. MIT has now become the highest-ranked US institution and delivered its best performance.
Harvard was ranked first for engineering and life sciences and Stanford was ranked number one for law and psychology, and education studies. Also, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) was ranked number one for physical sciences. Apart from these US universities, the UK based University of Oxford were at the top for computer science and medical and health.

The interesting fact that appeared from THE subject rankings were none of the Asian universities has topped for any of the subjects, however, they are well represented across the rankings. China and Singapore are well placed in THE Subject ranking 2025. They appeared in the top 50s for all 11 subjects. In addition to this, Hong Kong is represented in nine subjects and Japan in eight. Peking and Tsinghua University performed best among Asian universities as both of them have been placed at fourth and sixth position respectively for business and economics. Also, both these Chinese universities were ranked in the top 10 for education studies as well along with the University of Hong Kong. The National University of Singapore has been placed at ninth position for engineering and in the top 10 for Physical Sciences. This is the first for any Asian institution. Over the last two decades, higher education systems in East and South-East Asia have grown significantly because of the increased government funding, management, select internationalisation policies, more focused performance-oriented organisation, and growth in student numbers.
The Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru (IISc) has been placed in the top 100 universities globally. Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru (IISc) ranked 96th in the Computer Science rankings and 99th in Engineering. IISC has been listed in the top 100 subject wise ranking, a first for any Indian institution.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States has been placed at the top by QS world university ranking for 2025 and the University of Oxford has been ranked number one by Times Higher Education for 2025.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru is the top-ranked government university in India. It secured the top position in the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

There are many ways to choose your university such as fees, the ranking of the university, which state it is located and scholarships. My suggestion is to choose your research focus and write academic papers. In the US, PhD in Commerce admission into the university depends on what you want to study (your area of research) and your already completed research papers.
