CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira or Centre for Evaluation of Portuguese as a Foreign Language) or the CAPLE exam refers to a certificate of proficiency in Standard European Portuguese as a second language offered in Portugal and 45 other countries and territories. The School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Lisbon and the Instituto Camões collaborated in a tripartite agreement in Portugal and together developed, delivered, and accredited this language proficiency exam.
The CAPLE exam is administered by these institutes on behalf of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The CAPLE exam assesses the Portuguese language skills of candidates with these proficiency tests at six levels from A1 To C2 from the age group 16 years and over. The school versions of these CAPLE exams are also available for younger individuals. CAPLE exams are held three times (3) a year while the school version of CAPLE tests are held only once. The mode of application for the CAPLE 2024 exam is online. The candidate can register for the test at the official CAPLE website and can book a slot for the exam based on the CAPLE exam dates. The mode of payment can be done only through a credit card. After registration, the candidate has 24 hours to make the payment.

In order to be able to take the regular CAPLE exam, the candidate's age must be at least 16 years or more and be a national of a country where Portuguese is not an official language. The following are the minimum required eligibility criteria to attempt the CAPLE exams.

In case the candidate is from a country where Portuguese is an official language, they have to fulfil two of the following conditions:
The first language of their parents should not be Portuguese.
The acquired first language should not be Portuguese.

There are four categories of evaluation in the CAPLE exam in all major language proficiency levels - Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. There is also an additional category of evaluation of your Portuguese language proficiency known as "Competência Estrutural", which is a part of only the DIPLE, DAPLE, and DUPLE tests. The weightage and the duration of time assigned for each section varies according to the level of the CAPLE test.

The CAPLE exams are offered at six levels. Though some places may not have the provision of administering the ACESSO level of the CAPLE test.

It also certifies that the user can put their creative thoughts in the language and produce the same in an effective manner. The user at this level can use the Portuguese language in all situations, be it communication, work or education. The learner is capable of attending a university course in Portuguese or working in a country where Portuguese is the official language. |
C1 | DAPLE - Diploma avançado de português língua estrangeira | This level certifies that the user can use the Portuguese language in a varied range of less predictable communicative situations in contexts where, for example, Portuguese is used in all situations, including communication, work and as a medium of education. The user at this level may face some difficulties in situations where the language is used idiomatically or contains cultural references. |
B2 | DIPLE - Diploma intermédio de português língua estrangeira | This level certifies that the user of the Portuguese language is capable of using the language in everyday situations, be it academic or professional. Acquiring this level means that the user can work in an environment where the language of work is Portuguese. Though a user of this level may still face many difficulties while using the Portuguese language at work and as a language of communication. If you are a certified DIPLE speaker, you may attend academic courses where Portuguese is the language of teaching. |
B1 | DEPLE - Diploma elementar de português língua estrangeira | This level certifies that the user of the Portuguese language can use the language for interacting in a limited range of predictable everyday communicative situations in private, professional, and educational contexts. |
A2 | CIPLE - Certificado inicial de português língua estrangeira | This level certifies that the user can use the Portuguese language in a limited way in everyday communication. Also, the user can use the language in a way that indicates limited proficiency of the Portuguese language in a professional and academic environment. |
A1 | ACESSO - Certificado acesso ao português | This level certifies that the speaker has basic and limited knowledge of the Portuguese language and is capable of communicating in a basic manner in private, public and professional domains. |
In order to pass the CAPLE test, you need a minimum of 55% marks as the passing score. The following are the four categories of grading:
Muito Bom (Very Good): 85% – 100%
Bom (Good): 70% – 84%
Suficiente (Sufficient): 55% – 69%
Insuficiente (Insufficient / Fail): 0% – 54%
For citizenship in Portugal, the candidate has to acquire the certificate of CIPLE exam which is level A2.
There are two exams for checking Portuguese language proficiency. One is the CAPLE exam for checking European Portuguese in Portugal country and CELPE-Bras is the exam recognized and accepted by the Brazilian government

The language certificates do not officially expire. Though there might be situations where a university may ask to produce latest results and not accept results older than two to three years from the date of the test.
