FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Exam) is a test conducted by the NMC to grant a practising licence to medical graduates. Students graduating from a medical college wishing to practice in India should clear this exam. However, Indian students graduating from a Russian medical college should also take this test in order to practice in India. Despite this requirement, medical colleges and universities in Russia often affect students’ FMGE passing rates through curricula and other factors. Studying MBBS in Russia is a good option for Indian students due to its affordability and low cost of living. However, not all medical colleges in Russia are known for good FMGE passing rates. While institutions have more students, only a few of them show a high FMGE passing rate. This is due to the fact that many Indian and international students do not clear the exam for several reasons. A few factors below explain how medical colleges in Russia affect FMGE passing rates:
Medical students with English as the medium of instruction have an advantage over candidates studying MBBS abroad in a foreign language. The exam is conducted in English; hence, students graduating with an MBBS degree from an English-medium institution are more likely to pass. Moreover, Indian students studying MBBS in Russia should also study Russian as a part of their curricula because it is necessary to deal with patients in clinical settings.

Even though indian students studying in Russian medical colleges or universities manage to adapt to the new curriculum, a few students cannot strategise their preparation according to the exam pattern. For this reason, students miss a lot of time and fail in the FMGE exam. Moreover, students also often fail to recognise the exam pattern, as it tests both theoretical and practical topics.
Most of the Indian students who study MBBS in a Russian medical college or university often struggle to adapt to the new curriculum. This happens due to the High school curriculum of indian educational institutes, which is quite different from the education system. For this same reason, Indian students who emigrate for higher education often struggle to comprehend the new curriculum of medical colleges. This also hinders students’ preparation for the FMGE exam.

It is well known that clinical practice in Russia requires fluency in the local language. For this reason, Russian medical colleges and universities introduced a Russian language course in the 4th year of MBBS. Although the English medium of instruction is a good choice for Indian students, candidates who opt for bilingual colleges. This has become a huge advantage for students’ clinical practice and enhanced FMGE passing rates.

Overall, the bilingual medical colleges that offer the Russian course as part of the curriculum have shown higher FMGE passing rates than institutions offering solely English-taught MBBS courses. Nonetheless, it is the earnest efforts of students to learn through clinical practice that help them crack the FMGE exam. Therefore, the Russian language plays a significant role in determining the FMGE result, and students are advised to learn the language prior to the internship. Moreover, a higher passing percentage does not always mean a good FMGE passing outcome because those that have high passing rates also have a lower number of students appearing for the exam.

Russia is really worth it for MBBS because some of the medical colleges in the country are extremely affordable. Affordability and a simple admission process have been prominent factors in Indian students’ preference. However, it is important to acknowledge that medical students in this country are required to learn the local language to deal efficiently with the patients. Whoever fails to meet this requirement does face difficulty in the FMGE exam because the test assesses clinical skills. So whether Russia is worth it or not depends on the students’ ability to cope with a new language and environment.
That said, Russia tops the list of FMGE passing rates by a large number of candidates passing the test. Out of 6878 students who appeared, 2128 passed according to 2025 FMGE statistics. This is more than what every country has achieved so far.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes, Russia is extremely affordable for Indian students, and in terms of quality of education, it is a good option. However, students are required to learn the Russian language, which helps them clear the FMGE exam.
While most of the Russian medical colleges include a language course as part of their curricula, a few do not offer it. So, students need to learn from other sources.
In terms of the largest number of students, MARI STATE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL FACULTY comes first. However, IMMANUEL KANT BALTIC FEDERAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE has a higher passing percentage than any other college in the country.
Although quality of education plays a crucial role, the Russian language is necessary to clear the FMGE because it helps in clinical practice to deal with patients.
