GRE Participating Institutes - Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is an international standardised test taken for admission to postgraduate courses in the USA, Canada and Australia, among many other countries. It is an extensively acknowledged graduate admission exam. There are two exam formats: computer-delivered and paper-delivered. Though GRE is only an optional test in top universities in the world, having a good GRE score adds to your resume/CV. According to the Educational Testing Service, the exam conducting authority of the GRE, currently 1300+ business schools across the world accept GRE scores.
The GRE score cutoff varies for various top universities, as there are no fixed standards set by the leading body. It depends on a lot of factors, such as the number of test-takers, reputation, number of admission seats, complex level of the exam, etc. GRE has wide acceptability across the world. However, candidates must know if the university they have applied to mandates GRE or not. Read the full article to learn about GRE-participating institutions across the world and use it as a guide when applying to study abroad.
Here are some reasons why getting a good GRE score is crucial for getting admission to the best colleges worldwide.
GRE marks for top universities provide grad programs with an easily calculable way to compare you with other students.
Colleges that accept GRE scores receive distinct scores for each of the test's three sections, which permits graduate programs to place better weight on some skills than others.
GRE scores classify which potential students are likely to struggle academically in a particular skill, which can help programs formulate to offer extra provision to help those students be successful.
GRE test takers with good GRE scores can apply for thousands of scholarships presented by universities and B-schools to deserving international students.
There is no exact answer for what a good GRE score is. It is relative to the program applied to. Usually, trends of average GRE scores for a particular program are mentioned by the respective universities. In the absence of such information, candidates may get information by contacting the departments of respective colleges. In addition, following suggestions may be helpful for knowing good GRE scores for a program.
Know previous trends of average GRE scores for a chosen program to set a target score to achieve.
Know if overall GRE scores or sectional GRE cutoffs are practiced by respective universities when determining eligibility for a program.
Know if GRE scores are also used for determining scholarship eligibility. In that case, target for a high GRE score before starting GRE preparation.
Understand the weight given to GRE score in the entire application process for admission. Many universities in the USA have started giving less priority to GRE scores than academic requirements and ELP scores.
Know if a particular university allows multiple GRE attempts and submitting the best score. This can ease the pressure on scoring high GRE marks.
Now that you’ve understood the GRE scoring system, let’s move on to what would be measured as a “good” score. Below are the details:
GRE Score Range | Percentile Rank | Performance |
320-340 | 85-99 | Excellent |
300-320 | 50-55 | Good |
280-300 | 40-50 | Average |
Below 260 | 30-40 | Poor |
GRE Score Range | Percentile Rank | Performance |
5.0-6.0 | 92-99 | Excellent |
4.5-5.0 | 80-92 | Good |
3.5-4.5 | 38-80 | Average |
2.0-3.5 | 1-38 | Poor |
However, the GRE scores differ as per the university and the course that you choose.
Many top universities in USA have made the GRE only an optional test to give an advantage to students with high academic merit and course-relevant experience. Nevertheless, candidates can still send their GRE scores to gain a competitive advantage.

Hello,
It depends on the university you are applying to. Most German universities do not require GATE for admission to a Master's in Biotechnology. However, some universities may ask for the GRE , especially if you are applying to a highly competitive program.
You should check the specific admission requirements of the universities you are interested in. Generally, having IELTS (or TOEFL) and a German language proficiency certificate (if the course is in German) is enough.
Hope it helps !
GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and GMAT are standardized tests often required for admission to universities abroad, but they serve different purposes. The **GRE** (Graduate Record Examination) is used for admission to graduate programs and some business schools, focusing on verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. The **TOEFL** (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and **IELTS** (International English Language Testing System) assess English language proficiency, often required for non-native speakers applying to English-speaking countries; TOEFL is more common in the U.S., while IELTS is popular in the U.K. and other regions. The **GMAT** (Graduate Management Admission Test) is specifically for business school admissions, testing quantitative, verbal, analytical writing, and integrated reasoning skills, and is required for MBA programs. I would advise that you get in touch with a prominent abroad education advisor - a great one will really help you through the entire process, end-to-end.
