The GRE 2025 exam is a computer-delivered test that can be taken at a test centre or at home. The GRE General test duration is only 2 hours. The general version of the GRE exam pattern follows section-level adaptation where the question difficulty level in section 2 depends on the candidate's performance in section 1 of each measure. The GRE question paper includes three sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing.
There are different sections in this exam. Here is the GRE pattern 2025.
Measure | Number of Questions/Tasks | Duration |
Analytical Writing | 1 task | 30 minutes |
Verbal Reasoning | Section 1: 12 questions Section 2: 15 questions | 41 minutes |
Quantitative Reasoning | Section 1: 12 questions Section 2: 15 questions | 47 minutes |
Total | 55 | 1 hour 58 minutes |
The verbal section of the GRE exam evaluates how well a candidate analyzes the written material and develop a relationship between different components of the sentence. Following are some formats of verbal reasoning questions.
In the Text Completion (TC) questions, candidates need to fill in the blanks to complete sentences. There are many variations for these questions- 1-, 2-, and 3- blank questions and there are generally three to four of these questions in each verbal section. It is recommended to solve these questions in 1-1.5 minutes each. For solving this format, you will need a strong vocabulary and skills of understanding the given context clues and predict the correct answers. Candidates only get a point when all the blanks are answered correctly in a question.
Also Read: How to build vocabulary for GRE?
In the Sentence Equivalence (SE) questions, candidates are given two choices to fill a single blank by creating two coherent sentences that are logical and correct. There are around three SE questions in each GRE verbal section. Try to complete each question in 1 minute.
In the Reading Comprehension (RC) questions, candidates are given one or more paragraphs that develop an explanation or argument on a topic. You need to understand the main ideas given in the text and structure, research the most important details, and draw conclusion from them. You will need to masters strategic reading and paraphrasing skills to solve six to eight RC questions in about 1-3 minutes on reading the passage and 1 minute for solving the question.
These are the formats in which GRE quantitative questions appear in GRE exam:
In the Quantitative Comparison (QC) questions, candidates have to compare two quantities and identify their relationship. There will be around 4-to-6 QC questions in the quant section. You need to work on finding shortcut methods that allow you to compare rather than calculate to solve this section.
Candidates get Problem Solving (PS) questions in the form of multiple-choice questions, with 5 choices and 1 correct answer for each question. Either you will be asked to choose one or more correct answers from list of choices or enter the correct answer in a box. You need to master math concepts and strategies to be able to solve this section.
There are also around two questions of Problem Solving related to charts, where candidates need to decipher the correct information from the graph and answer the given questions.
Below is the GRE pattern 2025 for candidates appearing this year.
Subject Test | Number of Questions | Duration |
Mathematics | 66 | 2 hours 50 minutes |
Psychology | 70 | 2 hours |

The test reflects the thinking required for the present-day graduate, law and business school programs. The GRE exam syllabus 2025 assesses the candidates in 3 skill areas: analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.
GRE Verbal Reasoning: Verbal reasoning consists of question types like reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. The texts in this section are drawn from both academic and non-academic backgrounds like history, everyday topics, business, science, etc, and more.
GRE Quantitative Reasoning: This section assesses the basic mathematic concepts, skills, and the candidate's ability to solve the problem quantitatively. The content areas like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis, etc are included. Most of the topics are high school-level algebra and introductory statistics.
GRE Analytical Writing: There is only one task “Analyze an Issue” in this section. Here the test taker needs to evaluate the issue and develop an argument by specifying reasons and examples. This writing task assesses your critical thinking skills and analytical writing skills.

The Verbal and Quant sections of the GRE are each scored from 130 to 170. The mean score for Verbal Reasoning is 152, and the mean score for Quantitative Reasoning is 157. The Analytical Writing Assessment is scored from 0 to 6 in half-point increments, and the mean score is 4.0. A "good" GRE score is relative and depends on the specific programs and universities you're applying to. Overall, if you are able to score above 320, it is considered to be a good score, but there might be some specific programs that require higher scores. If you aim to secure 75th percentile or higher in both verbal and quantitative reasoning, it will be considered to be a good GRE score.
Every applicant can send their GRE score to four universities free of cost. This can be done by designating the required universities on the GRE exam date. Once your GRE exam scores are released, they will be automatically sent to the designated universities chosen by the candidate. If you want to send your scores to more than 4 universities you can order an additional score report at a specific cost and submit your GRE test scores.
The ScoreSelect feature of the GRE gives candidates the option to send only those GRE test scores to universities that are the best. However, even if this option is available, you must perform your best in the first attempt itself so that you don't need to retake the exam by paying the additional fees.
There is no universal GRE cutoff score and depends on universities that release cutoff for specific graduate programs. It depends on several factors like program's competitiveness, university ranking, and the field of study.

On Question asked by student community
Hello,
It depends on the university you are applying to. Most German universities do not require GATE for admission to a Master's in Biotechnology. However, some universities may ask for the GRE , especially if you are applying to a highly competitive program.
You should check the specific admission requirements of the universities you are interested in. Generally, having IELTS (or TOEFL) and a German language proficiency certificate (if the course is in German) is enough.
Hope it helps !
GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, and GMAT are standardized tests often required for admission to universities abroad, but they serve different purposes. The **GRE** (Graduate Record Examination) is used for admission to graduate programs and some business schools, focusing on verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. The **TOEFL** (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and **IELTS** (International English Language Testing System) assess English language proficiency, often required for non-native speakers applying to English-speaking countries; TOEFL is more common in the U.S., while IELTS is popular in the U.K. and other regions. The **GMAT** (Graduate Management Admission Test) is specifically for business school admissions, testing quantitative, verbal, analytical writing, and integrated reasoning skills, and is required for MBA programs. I would advise that you get in touch with a prominent abroad education advisor - a great one will really help you through the entire process, end-to-end.
