For Indian test takers, the GRE exam fee in India is Rs. 22,550 for the GRE general test that is conducted throughout the year. On the other hand, the GRE exam fee is Rs. 14,500 for the GRE Subject Test as discussed above. The GRE fees 2025 was updated on 1 August, 2024 inclusive of VAT registration tax of Rs. 3,440. Except in China, where it is USD 231.30, the GRE cost USD 220 worldwide. Candidates need to pay the GRE application fee at the time of GRE registration. Students who would like to reschedule the GRE test date are required to pay an additional rescheduling GRE fee in India of Rs. 5000. GRE Exam Fee is non-refundable. However, students get some part of their registration fee if they cancel the GRE test 2025 at least four days before the scheduled test date. In this case, students get half of their test fee. Students do not get fill refund of the GRE exam in any situation.

There are two types of GRE tests, and their costs are different. The GRE General test is taken for pursuing graduate level courses, whereas the GRE Subject test is taken for students who would like to study specialized courses or hold a strong background in a particular subject. As per the ETS website, GRE exam fees in India are Rs 22,550 for a General Test and Rs 14,500 for a Subject Test.

How to Pay for GRE Exam Fee 2025?
Candidates paying the GRE fees 2025 in India can use the following modes for online payment. For applicants making payments, the DCC Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) option is available, which allows the user to pay the GRE exam fees in Indian rupees from home currency instead of foreign currency. The GRE exam fee must be paid at the end of exam registration. Here are a few terms that are to be considered while paying the fees for the GRE exam in India.
ETS does not accept GRE fee in India in cash, candidates need to pay the fee online using different payment modes.
Make complete payment for the respective product or service.
No service or product is provided in the event of non-payment of the fee due.
Users are required to complete all the outstanding payments to get registered for any further ETS service.
Indian applicants registering online can pay the GRE exam fee in INR.
During the payment of the GRE exam fee 2025, applicants can be asked to verify their card-holder identity by entering the one-time password (OTP) or the authentication code. Failure to enter these details can lead to sale rejection. If the applicant does not know their 3D-secure passcode/password or received their OTP, they need to contact their respective bank or respective institution.
The ETS reserves the right to add or remove the GRE exam fee payment options or any other service payment options at its own discretion without any notice to the users.

GRE Reschedule Fee 2025
Candidates can reschedule the GRE test 4 days before the GRE exam date through their ETS account. Failing this deadline will lead to a zero refund of the GRE test fee. Here are a few other special GRE fees in India for special handling services listed below.

GRE Cancellation Fee 2025
Students also have an option to cancel their test. Candidates who cancelled early would get a refund of 50% of the GRE fee. Students must apply for the cancellation of the GRE at least 4 days before the scheduled GRE test date. There are no cash refunds available for the GRE fees; the amount is credited in US dollars back to the sourced card or bank account by which GRE test fees in India were paid.
Refund Policies for GRE Exam Cancellation
Here are the exam refund policies to be known by the candidate in case of cancellation of the GRE exam.
- The refund processing is subject to the tax if applicable.
- Failing to follow the proper exam registration process will not result in any refund of the GRE exam fee in India.
- Candidates who paid the exam fee through a debit or credit card will get their refund within 15 business days after the cancellation.
- The refund is only limited to the exam fee but not for the products or services offered by the ETS
GRE Score Reporting Fee 2025
As part of the registration, students can send their GRE scores to four graduate institutions. This is part of your test fee. When GRE results are released, candidates can designate four universities to receive their GRE scores. In case the candidates wish to send their GRE score to more universities, they can order additional score reports (ASRs) by paying a fee of $35 for each. If the candidate is not satisfied with the GRE exam total marks and would like to reinstate them, then the score reinstatement fee is $50.

The GRE diagnostic service is a test that helps the candidate to get an understanding of the test pattern and understand their performance in the test. It is a similar GRE practice test with valuable feedback. Candidates who have registered for the GRE can avail of this diagnostic service free of cost.
GRE at-home Test Fee
How much is the GRE fees 2025 in India for at-home test? The exam fee in India for the GRE home edition is Rs 22,550, which is the same as the GRE general test version. The GRE at-home version allows candidates to take the test from the comfort of their homes. Whether the testing is at home or at a test centre, there is no difference in the GRE exam fees 2025. All the other additional special handling requests are also the same for the GRE home edition and the general test. Hence, GRE exam fee in India for the at-home edition is the same.
GRE 2025 Exam Fee Waiver for Indian Students
Unfortunately, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which administers the GRE exam, does not currently provide a special fee waiver for international students, including those from India. The GRE Fee Reduction Programme is open to US citizens and permanent residents experiencing financial difficulties. Hence, the GRE test cost waiver is not for Indian students currently.
GRE Fee Reduction Program
Unfortunately, this is not valid for Indian students. This is a rare situation and happens at the discretion of the ETS (Education Testing System). The GRE Fee Reduction Program offers a great discount on the exam fee for:
- individuals who can demonstrate financial need
- Individuals who are unemployed and receiving unemployment compensation
- national programs that work with underrepresented groups, first generation college students and students with financial need
However, a GRE vouchers 2025 can be used either for GRE General Test or GRE Subject Test. Individuals who get a GRE Fee Reduction voucher will be charged USD 100 to register for the GRE General Test, or 50% of the usual test fee for a GRE Subject Test. It depends on the university you are applying to. Most German universities do not require GATE for admission to a Master's in Biotechnology. However, some universities may ask for the GRE , especially if you are applying to a highly competitive program.
You should check the specific admission requirements of the universities you are interested in. Generally, having IELTS (or TOEFL) and a German language proficiency certificate (if the course is in German) is enough.
