About BA Computing and Linguistics

The Computing and Linguistics major teaches students the fundamental ideas and techniques of the field. The study involves the areas of statistics and data science, computer science, and linguistics. Students will learn about every foundational tool and method that is required for this work in the areas. Through coursework and an independent research project, students will receive multidisciplinary training to develop natural language processing systems, carry out computational study of human language and automated analysis of textual data in applications, in the areas of social sciences, humanities, and sciences. 

Prerequisites for the course are statistics, computer programming, and linguistics. A qualification in single-variable calculus (Mathematics) is also preferred.

Admission and Application

Yale University accepts undergraduate applications made through CommonApp, Coalition, as well as Questbridge applications without preference for one over the other. Prospective international applicants must ensure to meet the eligibility criteria before beginning the application as well as keep the necessary documents ready. Undergraduate applicants usually receive admission decisions by mid-December and confirm their decision by early-May the following year. It is advised to submit the application as early as possible to accommodate obtaining a student visa.

How to Apply

  • Visit the official website yale.edu.

  • Go to Admissions and select “Undergraduate”.

  • Click on “Application Process”, followed by “International First Year Applicants” in the “Apply” section located on the top of the page.

  • Locate “Applying to Yale as a First-Year International Applicant” on the page and click on the link.

  • Select the type of application “The Coalition Application”, “The Common Application”, or “The QuestBridge National College Match Application”.

  • Answer Yale-specific questions in “The Coalition Application” or  “The Common Application”.

  • Submit documents such as letter of recommendation (LOR), official and translated school reports.

  • English proficiency test scores of IELTS/Duolingo.

  • Mid-Year school report and final school report (If necessary)

  • Pay an $80 application fee via Common Application or Coalition Application Portal.

  • Three LORs: Two from school teachers and one from counsellor

  • English Language Proficiency Test Scores (IELTSDuolingo)
