University of Maryland sponsors varsity teams in 8 men’s and 12 women’s sports. Athletic teams of the university are called Maryland Terrapins, or Terps. The official Mascot is Testudo. Athletic teams are members of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. Men’s sports comprise Baseball, basketball, Football, Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer, Track & field, and Wrestling. Women’s sports comprise Basketball, Cross country, Field hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track & field, and Volleyball.
University of Maryland students can access two swimming pools during their time of study at the university. One of them is an indoor swimming pool located in Eppley Recreation Center, the primary venue for UMD students and RecWell members. It is big enough to host large swim and diving competitions, games like water polo, log rolling, and water based obstacle courses. Outdoor swimming pool has pool decks to relax under the warm sun. It can accommodate lap swimming, sand volleyball, etc.
Students can commute to the university of Maryland through public transportation buses, trains, car rentals, carpools, campus-provided shuttle buses. E-motorbikes, bicycles are also used for commuting within and around the College Park campus. There are Electronic vehicle charging facilities, bicycle racks available at College Park campus. Students, staff, faculty can utilise free shuttle bus services by showing ID cards. For using motorised scooters, they must have a lawful licence plate and the owner should have insurance against injury. Public transport and taxis are chargeable.
Eating and dining facilities at University of Maryland provide 10 cafes, dining halls and a restaurant. The campus is home to 10 cafeteria, Applause, Breakpoint, Food for Thought, Footnotes, IDEA Central cafe, Physical Science Complex, Rudy’s, Sneaker’s, The Coffee Bar, E+M Cafe. Students can order foods with dietary restrictions such as vegan, gluten free etc. Footnotes is located in McKeldin Library that offers Starbucks coffee, milk, cold drinks like Pepsi, along with a course of fresh sandwiches, sushi, salads, and fruit.
University health centre (UHC) is the in-house Healthcare facility for students at UMD, College Park. UHC provides primary care,flu shots, women’s health, nutritional services, behavioural healthcare, a pharmacy and advocacy services. Facilities for physical therapy, laboratories, X-Ray, allergy clinic, substance use intervention and treatment are available. Around 100 diverse college health and wellness professionals are serving at UHC for students, staff and faculty. While some services are chargeable, students who are enrolled in long-term courses must have health insurance.
University of Maryland has around 11% of international students among the total student body. That is around 4,266 students out of 40,709 students. As of fall 2022, 3,484 international graduates and 782 international undergraduates were enrolled at the university. Top five countries that sent graduates are India, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Iran with 1277, 1083, 143, 134, and 73 respectively.
