Portland State University was opened in 1946 as Vanport Extension Centre for 220 students in Vanport. However, the university permanently was established in 1952 as a government-owned research institute. PSU is recognised as one of Oregon's most diverse, innovative and affordable research universities. This institution is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).
