    About BA Hons Animation with Foundation Year

    BA Hons Animation with Foundation Year is a course systematically designed by the Department of Media Arts and Communication of Sheffield Hallam University for the students aspiring to make a career in the field of animation. It is an apt course for the students who wish to pursue BA Hons Animation programme but do not meet the eligibility criteria or who want to prepare themselves before starting degree-level study in the field. 

    The course is planned in a way that encourages students to engage with the world, team up with others and to think outside the box in a supportive and healthy environment. The students get to learn technical and theoretical knowledge of story-boarding, life drawing and concept art forming a strong foundation through this course. They get to explore various forms of animation including 2D drawn and digital based animation, stop motion animation and 3D CGI animation and specialise in one of them for their major project film. 

    The curriculum of the programme includes study of a broad range of media arts and communication topics and specialisation in preferred disciplines. The students get to learn through completing coursework and projects, writing reports, discussing in peer critique groups and creating portfolios. The curriculum consists of a year-long work placement for students to get hands-on experience in the real world; attending field trips like animation festival trips, film seminars and guest lectures by industry experts to gain the latest industry knowledge and participating in competitions like Nick Park Award competition.

    The teaching methods for this programme include daily classes, individual tutorials, workshops and seminars, practical sessions, media labs and group work. Students also have access to digital and online sources to aid their learning. The students get to work with equipment like industry-standard stop motion studio, multi-disciplinary 2D animation project room, green screen studio, 3D printers, laser cutters, motion capture suite, Adobe CC suite, Toon Boom Harmony, Dragon Frame, Autodesk Maya, 3D Studio Max and VRay Render engine.

    After successfully completing the course, students can work as stop motion animator, 3D CGI animator, set designer, puppet builder, lighting technician, texture artist, modeller, rigger, compositor, producer, editor, storyboard artist and character designer.

    Admission and Application

    Before applying to the BA Hons Animation with Foundation Year, applicants must read the eligibility criteria carefully and then head to the University admission portal. While applying, the applicants must take note that the information filled in the online application form is complete and accurate. Also, all the required documents must be submitted successfully. The UK applicants can apply for the course through UCAS while the applicants from countries other than the UK can apply through UCAS or can directly apply.

    • The UK applicants must go to the official website of UCAS www.ucas.com and register on UCAS Hub. The other applicants can apply through the UCAS or can directly apply by asking for an application form through emailing at internationaladmissions@shu.ac.uk.

    • Fill all the required details accurately and carefully.

    • Submit a personal statement and name and contact details of references along with the application form. 

    • After submission, the applications are reviewed by University’s Admissions tutors who check the subjects studied, grades in those subjects, personal statement and the references received.

    • Based on the course, if the application is successful, then the applicant is called for an interview or/and submit a portfolio.

    • Based on the applicant’s performance, a decision regarding the applicant’s admission is made which is communicated to the applicant through UCAS Hub. The decision can be a conditional offer, an unconditional offer or a rejection.

    • If an applicant receives a conditional offer, then he/she must meet certain conditions decided by the University to get admission. In this case, the applicant needs to decide which University is his/her first choice and which is a backup which are termed as ‘Firm choice’ and ‘Insurance choice’ respectively. Incase of not meeting the conditions, textual a conoffer can be made depending on the circumstances of the applicant.

    • If an applicant receives an unconditional offer, he/she gets admitted to the course immediately. There’s no need for an insurance choice in this case.

    • The applicants can reply to the offer made through UCAs Hub.

    • In case of rejection of the application, the applicant can request for feedback on the same by contacting Admissions through email or letter within 28 days of the rejection of the application.

    Eligibility

    The eligibility criteria for students from the UK and students from countries other than the UK are different. The minimum requirements for admission to BA Hons Animation with Foundation Year programme for UK applicants are given below.

    Minimum Eligibility Criteria for UK Applicants

    • The applicants must have secured 80 UCAS points of which at least 32 points must be allocated to one A level or equivalent or an alternative qualification such as an Access course.

    • The applicants must hold grade C or 4 or equivalents in GCSE English Language or Literature.

    • The applicants must hold grade C or 4 or equivalents in GCSE Maths.

    • The applicants must be 18 years old or above.

    • If English is not the applicants’ first language, they need to score 6.0 or above overall and 5.5 in each component of the IELTS exam. 

     Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Indian applicants 

    • The applicants must have secured 65% or above in 12th standard.

    • A levels

    • 28 points or above in International Baccalaureate

    • For entry to the second or third year of the programme, Higher National Diploma qualifications are taken into account.

    • IELTS score must be 6.0 or above with 5.5 or above in each component.
