About M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology

Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) offers a one-year full-time Master of Science/Post Graduate Diploma programme in Biopharmaceutical Technology. The programme is being offered by TUS at the Athlone campus since 1996. The M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme is offered by the Department of Life and Physical Sciences. M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme includes lectures and laboratory sessions in addition to site visits to local biopharmaceutical plants, guest lectures and practical training at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research & Training (NIBRT) in Dublin. NIBRT is a replica bioprocessing plant and comprises manufacturing equipment with a modern bioprocessing facility. The available facilities include fill finish, upstream, downstream and bioanalytical facilities.

The M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme offers various opportunities to its graduates in the fields of Medical Device, Medical Diagnostics, Biopharmaceutical and Biotechnology sectors.

The course structure of M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme is divided into two semesters with two modules. The two modules run throughout the academic year. Semester 1 includes Analytical Tools for Characterising Biopharmaceutical, Cell Culture and Cell Line Development, Protein Biochemistry, Lean Six Sigma for Biopharma. Semester 2 includes Immunobiologics, Contemporary Issues in Biopharm, Bioprocess Technology, Quality by Design and Project Management, Research Project, and Practical Elements. Students have to do research projects in semester 2 and is continued after that in the summer period.

Admission and Application

The M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme admission procedure at Technological University of the Shannon follows simple procedure. First students have to check their eligibility criteria. Once the eligibility criteria is met, students have to go to the course page and click on the Online Application System. After clicking on the link, students will be directed to site- ssb.midlands.tus.ie. New users have to create a username and password in order to log in to the application form. Next, students have to fill the application form, upload the documents and submit. 

After the submission, the application will be assessed by the concerned department. Students have to track the status of their application by logging into the same portal. Applicants may also have to appear for an interview. For international students, online Zoom/Skype/MS Teams interviews may be arranged.

Eligibility

In order to take Technological University of the Shannon admission to the M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme, students have to meet the eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria is the required criteria for entry into the programme. For M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme admission, students should have a first or a second-class honours degree in the relevant stream. Graduates who do not meet the above criteria or hold equivalent qualifications or have relevant work experience can also apply for the programme admission. 

The M.Sc Biopharmaceutical Technology programme holds additional English language requirements for international students. Technological University of the Shannon accepts scores of IELTS in the case of international student admission.

  • Candidates should have a first or a second-class honours grade or an international equivalent in a Biology or Chemistry-related primary degree (for example Biotechnology, Toxicology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Genetics, Neuroscience, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Physiology, Medicinal Chemistry or an equivalent qualification)

  • Graduates with equivalent qualifications in related science and technology disciplines or who have relevant industrial experience will be considered
