About M.Sc Accounting

M.Sc Accounting is offered by Dhillon School of Business accredited by AACSB at University of Lethbridge (Alberta, Canada). The programme is comprehensively designed for students holding an undergraduate degree or a significant professional experience in Management, Commerce, Business or a related discipline with Accounting as majors.

There are two pathways available to complete M.Sc Accounting(Mgt.) programme- one is the thesis pathway and the other is the project pathway with concentration in Business Analytics. In the thesis pathway, students involve in independent research projects focused in their particular area of interest within the Accounting discipline under the guidance of experienced faculty members. The research project helps students in polishing their analytical capabilities, critical thinking skills and leads them to possess revolutionary ideas which have practical significance for businesses, non-profit organisations and policy makers. The comprehensive education provided through the thesis pathway in student’s chosen area of interest prepares them to prosper in high-quality doctoral programs and in careers like research analyst, strategy consultants, market research managers, policy analyst, data analyst, and business development managers. The programme through the thesis pathway can be completed within 20 months on a full-time basis. In the project-based pathway, Business Analytics is offered as an experiential project. This project includes application of data science techniques and tools to real-world business or non-profit problems within the students’ chosen area of interest i.e. accounting. If pursued on a full-time basis, the M.Sc Accounting programme can be completed within 16 months through this pathway. 

M.Sc Accounting(Mgt.), a programme with accounting as a major, includes the scrutiny of various factors that affects the design, provision, quality, use, and impact of financial and non-financial data on different types of stakeholders.The use of accounting information in the capital markets, auditors' and managers' judgement and decision-making processes, the factors affecting the quality and use of information, accounting information systems, ethics, performance assessment, and contracting uses of accounting information are all popular study topics within the programme. 

The Co-operative education option is also available in the M.Sc Accounting course at the University of Lethbridge. In this option, there is an integration of academic study and relevant paid work experience in fields such as government, public research institutions, and private industry. It is provided to students so that they can develop a professional network and get an extended learning environment.

Admission and Application

Before applying to the M.Sc Accounting(Mgt.), applicants must read the eligibility criteria carefully and then head to the University of Lethbridge admission portal. While applying, the applicants must take note that the information filled in the online application form is complete and accurate. Also, all the required documents must be submitted successfully.

How To Apply for M.Sc Accounting(Mgt.)

  • Go to the official website of University of Lethbridge and read all the admission requirements carefully.

  • Go to the ‘Programs & Admission’ section at the official website and click on ‘Apply/Resume Application’.

  • Create an account on the admission portal and apply online by clicking ‘Online Application’.

  • Fill the application carefully and submit it with all the supporting documents by midnight on the deadline date.

  • The applicant will receive an email of acknowledgement immediately after submitting the application.

  • Get ready all the official documents. The sending of official transcripts from the issuing institution to the University of Lethbridge is not necessary for applicants who have attended or are currently enrolled in an institution that participates in ApplyAlberta. You can find a list of participating institutions at www.applyalberta.ca.

  • The application is then reviewed and assessed by the faculty members of Accounting major who make a recommendation on admission to the Dhillon School of Business Graduate Programs Committee.

  • The final decision of the committee regarding the admission is communicated to the applicants via the Registrar’s Office.

Note: Students who have studied from non-Canadian universities must provide notarized English translations of all documents not in the English language.

Documents Required for M.Sc Accounting

  • Academic Transcripts: Unofficial academic transcripts are to be uploaded in the application while the official transcripts are to be sent to the Registrar’s Office before the course registration. 

  • 3 Reference Letters or Letter of Recommendation: Reference letters can be academic or professional. Also they must not be from a friend or family member. For every new application, new reference letters must be submitted. No re-use of reference letters from previous applications is accepted. The letters must not be submitted through email or regular mail. 

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Letter of Intent or SOP: The letter of Intent must contain goals or objectives for admission to the chosen course along with research interests in the same. The word-limit is 500 and the letter must be addressed to the Dhillon School of Business Graduate Programs Committee

  • English Language Proficiency scores                                                                                            

Eligibility

The minimum academic qualifications for applicants of Canada and international applicants are different. For international applicants, the criteria is given country-wise. The requirements apart from the academic ones are the same for all applicants irrespective of their citizenship or country of origin.

Minimum Academic Requirements for Canadian Applicants

  • The applicant must hold an undergraduate degree in Accounting.

  • The applicant must have secured a minimum of 3.0 grade on uLethbridge scale of 4.0 on the last 20 graded university-level term courses or on the last master’s course if the applicant is applying for another master’s course.

Minimum Academic Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • The applicant must hold a 4-years undergraduate degree in Accounting with a minimum of first class division or grade of 4.0 on a scale of 5.0

  • The applicant must hold a 3-years bachelor’s degree along with the master’s degree in Accounting with a minimum of first class division or grade of 4.0 on a scale of 5.0

Minimum English Language Requirements

Applicants must fulfil any one of the following criteria to be eligible for M.Sc Accounting.

  • The applicant must successfully complete the Advanced Level of EAP programme of University of Lethbridge. 

  • The applicant from other universities in Canada, whose ELP requirements are as demanding as that of the University of Lethbridge, must have secured a passing grade in their EAP programme.

  • The applicant must have secured a passing grade in the EAP programme of the School of Graduate Studies.

  • TOEFL(iBT) or TOEFL iBT Home Edition score - 86

However, there are some exceptions also. The applicants who have successfully completed bachelor’s or master’s degree from a recognised institution of Canada or any other country where English is the primary language are exempted from ELP tests or requirements.
