Lakehead University was founded in 1946. It first began as a public research school and was called the Lakehead Technical Institute and Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology. Later, it gained university status in 1965.

- Program-specific prerequisite courses completed at the senior level (e.g. Grade 12);
- The equivalent of a minimum 70% overall final average.
Postgraduate:
- Degree students must have a three or four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent with at least second-class standing (B) based on their last 20 half courses or equivalent unless otherwise specified in the Admission Requirements of a specific programme.
