About M.Sc Nationalism in Global Perspective

Nationalism in Global Perspective MSc is primarily suitable for those students who have part or full coverage of courses in social sciences, international relations and history, and politics. But anyone who seeks to understand, study, learn, analyse and provide critique nationalism and how it impacts society, social institutions, and world culture at large, can pursue this course. University of Edinburgh has designed the course to develop a comprehensive perspective of the ideas involved and key figures in the field. Students at the end of the course will be able to pursue independent research by themselves.


MSc Nationalism in Global Perspective course requires achievement of 180 credits. Two compulsory courses of 20 credits each, four optional courses of 20 credits each along with a 60-credit dissertation. Full time course is completed in two semesters and the dissertation. Core courses include theorising Nationalism, and comparing Nationalisms. Students will learn theories of nationalism through the first course and a wide range of global cases on the topic. Dissertation gives an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge on the topic. 


In the contemporary world, this course prepares students with many skills and knowledge regarding diverse forms of nationalism, and many ways of studying it. Along with understanding the interdisciplinary nature of Nationalism, the course empowers the students to make informed decisions regarding many global issues of nationalism. Successful completion of courses makes students take up various roles in education and research (MRes or PhD), international organisations like UN, government policy and advocacy, media and journalism.

Providing courses of high employability (96%), University of Edinburgh admissions are highly competitive yet rewarding. While undergraduates need a minimum mark of 75%, graduates need 60-70% to be considered for admissions. However, interviews may also be conducted in case of postgraduate applicants before issuing the admission decision.

  • A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 60% or GPA of 8 on a 10 scale.

  • IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

  • TOEFL IBT score of 100 with at least 20 in each component.

  • PTE Score of 70 with at least 59 in each component.
