    About M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies - Chinese Studies

    Clare College Cambridge offers an 11-month full-time M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies). The course is offered by the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) programme is primarily for students who want to pursue a Ph.D in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies). The programme is particularly designed for students who have an undergraduate background in Chinese Studies or related fields and have a keen interest in research. M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) provides students with exposure of topic-specific or discipline-based analytical frameworks and trains them in primary source language(s) and research skills.

    M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) programme offers two streams of study. They are- 

    • Modern and Contemporary Chinese Studies- It involves compulsory papers and optional papers. The compulsory paper includes Asia in Theory (Team taught; theoretical and methodological approaches)

    The optional papers include Chinese Literature and Modernity, Topics in Modern Chinese History, The Anthropology of China,  Chinese Linguistics,  Advanced Readings in Chinese on a relevant subject (Qing and Republican historical documents, Modern literary texts, Chinese religions and so on) - Alternative Paper (POLIS, History, Anthropology, Development Studies)

    Students have to select two of the optional papers from the above list.

    • Pre-Modern Chinese Studies - Students have to select any three of the following papers: Classical and Literary Chinese Texts (received and excavated texts, manuscripts), Early China, specified topic, Medieval China, specified topic, Asia in Theory (team-taught; theoretical and methodological approaches: with the supervisor's permission as the focus of this paper is on the modern period), Japanese for Sinologists (reading Japanese scholarship on pre-modern China), Imperial China (specified topic like ritual and religion), Alternative Paper(History, Divinity, Anthropology, Development Studies, POLIS)

    Students can select one of the two streams while admitted for the MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) programme. Students also have the option to combine papers from above two but only with the consent of the related supervisor and relevant teachers. 

    M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) programme assessment includes examinations, 5,000-word essays. Students also have to submit a 15,000-word dissertation with an oral examination on it and related fields of knowledge.

    Admission and Application

    Before applying for admission at Clare College Cambridge, students must check their eligibility criteria first. Once the eligibility criteria is met, students have to select the course M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) and apply online. This will open the Applicant Portal. After the students have logged in, they can fil the form, submit the documents, apply for funding, give the college preference, pay the application fee, submit the application and track the progress of their application. It must be noted that supporting documents must include references and application form should be submitted before the deadline. 

    How to Apply

    • Students have to apply online on the course webpage.

    • Students have to visit the course page of M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) of Clare College Cambridge and click on the ‘Apply Now’ button on  the right.

    • After that, students will be directed to the applicant portal.

    • Create the username and password.

    • Next, log in and fill the application form.

    • Attach all the supporting documents.

    • Complete the application form and pay the application form fee of $50. 

    • Finally, save and submit the application form.

    • Students can track the status of their application by logging to the same portal.

    Eligibility

    Meeting the eligibility criteria is the first step of the Clare College Cambridge admission process. As per the M.Phil Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Chinese Studies) programme requirement, candidates should have a 2.1 honours degree or a first BA level degree from a UK university. Candidatse should also have a good knowledge of Modern Chinese language. International students from India should have 70% marks or 7.3+ CGPA in bachelor’s degree or 75% marks or 8.0+ CGPA in bachelor’s degree (If the academic requirement of the course is a first) in the relevant subject. Clare College Cambridge also accepts IELTS/TOEFL scores in the English language requirements. 

    • Should have achieved a UK high 2.1 honours degree

    Or 

    • A first at BA level from a UK university or equivalent

    • Good working knowledge (especially reading) of Modern Chinese


    For International Students (India)-

    • Should have passed professional bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a well-ranked institution with an overall grade of 70% or CGPA 7.3+ in professional subjects like Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Business Management, Business Studies, Computer Applications, Engineering, Fine Arts, Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Planning, and Technology from any institution recoganised by Ecctis or Bachelor of Arts / Science / Commerce (3-4 years)

    If the academic requirement of the course is a first:

    • Should have passed professional bachelor’s degree (4 years) from a well-ranked institution with an overall grade of 75% or CGPA 8.0+ in professional subjects like Agriculture, Architecture, Business Administration, Business Management, Business Studies, Computer Applications, Engineering, Fine Arts, Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Planning, and Technology from any institution recoganised by Ecctis or Bachelor of Arts / Science / Commerce (3-4 years)
