About Aberystwyth University

Aberystwyth University, the first university in Wales, was founded in October 1872 with 26 students. Aberystwyth University is placed in the UK's top 50 universities in the main national rankings. The university also has a 91 per cent overall student satisfaction rating according to the National Student Survey and was ranked first in England and Wales for student satisfaction. In addition, in 2019, it became the first university to be named "The University of the Year for Teaching Quality" by The Times and Sunday Times for two consecutive years. It was also ranked 41st in the Times University Guide 2023 and 40th in the Guardian University Guide 2023. 

Over the past 150 years, the university has grown into a potent academic community to study in UK. Over 8,000 students are enrolled at the institution, which has 19 academic departments divided into three faculties: social sciences, arts and humanities, and sciences, in addition to consistently being recognised as a top institution that places a priority on academic excellence. Their motto is "A world without knowledge is no world at all.". 

The main campus of the university is situated on Penglais Hill, overlooking the town of Aberystwyth, a town that takes pride in being welcoming and inclusive. Aberystwyth University Admission and Application

Students can apply online for full-time, part-time, and distance learning programs. The Aberystwyth University admission application portal should be used to submit online applications for postgraduate studies. For UG courses, students can apply for Aberystwyth University admissions through UCAS.

To study at Aberystwyth University, students need to meet the minimum academic and English language entrance requirements.

For Undergraduate:

The entry requirements differ significantly depending on the subject and course. They have an inclusive policy as a university that recognises a wide range of qualifications and exam grades from A-Level or equivalent-level qualifications.

  • India: Certificate in Year XII Std. from a recognised central or state board, 75% in Year XII Std.

For Postgraduate:

Generally, the minimum entry requirement for most taught master's courses is a lower second-class honours degree (2:2).

  • India: The successful completion of a bachelor's degree from a recognised institution is required for admission to a postgraduate course.

Transportation in the City

While cycling is being promoted by the town and university with the cycle-to-work scheme and the introduction of cycleways, students can also always use public transport, with a major step taken by the university with the "AHA" travel permit scheme, which provides free bus travel for students and staff on Arriva services within Aberystwyth. Aberystwyth has numerous bus routes that run throughout the day to a variety of destinations, including Cardigan, Bangor, Cardiff, Swansea, Machynlleth, and many others. All bus services are operated by private companies. There are also car-sharing schemes with informal groups within departments that have established their own car-sharing arrangements.

Being a university town, it's dominated by students, which means there are events running throughout the year. Societies are popular and revolve around nights out. People make friends easily, and there's plenty of exploring to do. 

  • For long lazy days barbecuing on the beach in summer, there are three beautiful beaches to choose from: North Beach, South Beach, and Tan-Y-Bwlch Beach.

The Aberystwyth universities are located on or near the Penglais Campus. The university offers a range of options to fit student's interests and financial situations. Ranging from an en-suite room, a standard room with shared bathroom facilities, to a self-contained studio, with catered or self-catered facilities. Also, students wanting to live through the medium of Welsh have the option of living in a catered residence or in a self-catered residence. The university also guarantees university-managed housing for all first-year students. 

The annual cost for Aberystwyth residencies can range from £3,721 to £6,502. Pantycelyn, a brand new en-suite accommodation in UK for up to 200 students who wish to live through the medium of Welsh, will cost you £5,636, which includes a sum of £1,702.80 as a prepaid meal allowance.

Study Amenities

Library

The main university library is the Hugh Owen Library, located on the Penglais campus. There are three floors in the library, along with an open study area. It provides areas for students to study, a variety of amenities and materials, as well as an IT and library help desk. There is also a physical sciences library at the university. Aberystwyth University also is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme which means that certain categories of users can use other higher education(HE) institution libraries.

There are several different places to eat and drink on campus, including The Food Hall, an award-winning restaurant that is located on the university's main campus. The Food Hall serves value meals beginning at £4.95 and accommodates all dietary needs and allergens. They also have a cafe in the Arts Center known as the Arts Center Cafe. Other cafes include IBERBach in the new IBERS building, Nosh Da, which is located within the Students' Union, SGUBORfach, located in the SGUBOR lounge on Fferm Penglais, and the Students' Union Shop.

Aberystwyth University International Office Details

Aberystwyth highly advises international students to get in touch with their local British Council as soon as possible to ask about financial aid. Additionally, the majority of British Council offices will have a library of materials you can use to research independent foundations and trusts that might offer scholarships in the subject area of your choice of study. 

The university also has an International Accommodation Award, which provides the students with a housing scholarship. It is applicable for the duration of the taught element of the student's studies, whether they are studying a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or a foundation course. It gives them the option of having their on-campus housing either entirely free of charge or discounted by £2,000. Aberystwyth University also offers an AberGrad Scholarship that applies to both UK/EU and international students.
